    I think the modern word for those women would be "homely." Back then, having enough food to have a little chubbiness was a sign of stature. Now it's the reverse, with the wealthy having the means to buy more expensive healthy foods and liposuction and the poor and uneducated eating McDonalds and getting fat (not that all fat people are fast food junkies, but many Americans are).
