adWords in Iran?

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by bangweb, Sep 14, 2007.

I notice in the list of countries that adwords can be targeted to Iran wasn't listed.

Is anyone aware of if and how I can get adwords in Iran?

If not, are there any search engines that target this country?

    Regards.

you may want to contact google about it, maybe there isn't a big enough market for it.

I'm guessing it's due to the trade embargo?

Maybe that will clear it up for you.
In other words, there is no adwords in Iran, or much of anything internet wise for that matter.

It's been 12-18 months since I last did it, but I ran campaigns in Iran without any problems. It was a political campaign focused on getting people in Iran to view a video interview of Wafa Sultan, and we got no less than 20,000 click-throughs from Iran.

That's surprising that Google's no longer running campaigns there; in fact I'd bet that it wasn't Google's decision to stop but rather the Iranian government's decision.

So you're saying Iran doesn't show up as a country in AdWords?

I went to Iran a month ago and Google Ads were displaying fine, but now that I went to set up a campaign it wasn't there to choose from the list of countries... I contacted Google, and they sent me a bloody template response, which did not address my question AT ALL. So I replied essentially going 'wtf, answer my question' - I have yet to receive an answer.

What country is that in the Eastern Europe area of that map? I can't for the life of me think of a country there that would be "blacklisted" :D

    Cheers

    Here is Google's response:

"Thank you for your email. I understand your concern that you are not able to
target Iran as one of your targeting countries while setting up a new campaign.
This is because Google routinely reviews its policies regarding advertising,
including its policies regarding the geographical targeting of ads. Based on our
most recent review of these policies and consistent with the Terms and
Conditions of our AdWords service, we have decided to no longer offer
geographical targeting of ads to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please keep in mind that this
decision only concerns our advertising and in no way affects the search results
we deliver. Google offers broad access to content across the web without
    censoring results."

The Iranian govt is saying they made the decision to block Google. Isn't it odd that Google in its email to the previous poster made it sound like the decision was Google's, and also made it appear that it only applied to people advertising in Iran from outside Iran?

Anyone know the real, confirmed deal?

Turkish and Iranian economies have always been appr. equal in size.
There's an office of Google in Turkey, not in Iran. It's not about market size.

    It should be political.

I can't believe Vietnam is on that list. I have friends there and they pretty much do and say what they want online...

ly2, thank you for the map. I've never actually seen that before. It does make sense that it would more so be the actual governments where the problem is.

Dang, who the hell is Belarus!!

So it looks like Iran has lifted the the ban on google but they're still not listed in adwords. Funny thing -- Belarus is on the list in adwords.
