Traffic from directories?

Would you say directories are just a better and stronger way of building backlinks? Or even say they are only good for helping your link weight and SERP positioning?

Because in the past from all the directories my previous sites have been included in, I have only usually recieved one click from them, and it usually comes from URL's such as, http://www.example.com/admin/ - so I know the click is simply coming from the administrator approving the actual website.

Do you have any expierience from directories which actually provide constant traffic to your website (preferably tragetted traffic)? If you do please provide the URL's. I am not too bothered whether there are actually any out there, but it would be interesting to find out if any exist.

I appreciate all feedback and website address that you provide. Thanks in advance.

I think that most people submit to directories for their SERPs. Not many directories give off much traffic. I've heard people say that dmoz gives them only about 5 hits per day.

I get lots of traffic on bidding websites home pages.. and have been told that my site passes lots of traffic.

If you are looking for traffic, bidding directories that get traffic are a good way.

Directories are mainly used for SERPs and backlinks. I think maybe 5 or less % of directories actually give a considerable amount of traffic.

I have tried a few bidding directories in the past and I think the best one I have used in my expierience is http://www.dollarlinking.com/. But it is generally better to land on the main page (obviously).

There are few bid directories out there that send traffic. Hunting for the better ones is a good idea:)

Traffic last month from the two directories that send me the most traffic:

    • www.2yi.net = 36 visits, 4.06 pages/visit
    • www.trincas.org = 35 visits, 4.17 pages/visit

That’s about 300 pageviews last month from those two directories.

What is the bounce rate from these two websites though? High or low? I know I sound like I want to find the far end of a fart here, but I don't want to waste moula :p .

Depends -- But there are a few web directories out there that do send quite a big amount of traffic, today you can find few bidding directories that send massive traffic, another good reason to rank high on bidding directories.

Bounce rate for 2yi was 33.3%. For Trincas it was 22.86%. Not bad.

Most of the traffic I get from Google goes to a link detail page. Certainly, most are clicking on to the listed site. I would bet some blogs listed on bloglisting.net are getting up to 50 hits a day from me.

That isn't too bad, but I think overall to actually gain high traffic from directories, you need to be features in thousands of them.

Realistically a large majority of people go to all these general directories just to submit sites and not to find sites as they can just do that via Google.

Now if you want traffic then it can be done from Directories. The directories that are more likely to give you traffic and I know this 100% is the niche directories. There are more people that are actually likely to use niche directories to find sites or stuff rather than using Google most probably.

For example, hotscripts for scripts will send you good traffic, a freebies directory could send you some good traffic, etc.
