With Google stand on Directories - Is that worth running a Directory?

    1) Unless you promote and get good PR people don't like to submit.
-- Google don't want you to buy good links.
-- How could you promote without buying links?

    2) how do you get some one to pay if you don't promote/get good PR?

This looks like a Catch 22..

Google has not penalized all directories.

If you promote heavily they are penalizing for sure.

Is there one directory that is promoted heavily and not penalized?

And without promotion, you don't get submissions. If you just wait for natural traffic why do people submit to that directory?

You dont need to buy links if you run a directory. You can just exchange links with other good web directories. Theres illions of directory owners out there that would exchange links for free.

Not sure if Goolge is going to be happy with this or not.
At this time they are going after directories that are promoted big time!

Next they may go after Link Exchanges... you never know.

It has also been proven that all link schemes can be 'traced' as it was by Google. Proven on this board, I do not have the links handy.

Yes but take your time to search for the good ones, not every directory is dumped by G, just the "fake" ones. :p

for your info - The directories dumped by G are not "fake" they are promoted big time.

Fake ones are the ones that have a dropped domain with PR and some one add a directory and sell links as if the site has PR.

If a directory is started at PR0 and some one promote - Spending lot of time and money that is not fake. (Unfortunately G is considering like that)

    Hope they change that attitude.

    Please define good ones?

How do the good one promote - just use AdWords for promotion?
Any other promotion they can do?

    Thanks

I think so as well, while you are still optimizing in a good way you will be fine.

I don't believe that Google's stance has ever changed on directories. They may have recently targeted some sites that they felt were violating their webmaster guidelines, but that's nothing new. It's just that the spotlight shone on this industry.

The game is the same as it ever was. Build a site that provides valuable resources to users in a manner that doesn't violate their guidelines and they'll play nice. Do it the other way and you're playing with fire - it's only a matter of time until you get burned.

    That's not the question here.

The question here is, "how to get a high PR without buying links?"

No one wants to submit to PR3 - PR4 sites nowadays.

Most popular directories are buying links today and thus are violating Google's guidelines.

That depends on how you define fake. If a directory is not what it appears to be, its a fake. Google did good this time and hopefuly we can now get on and start buiding directories the way they are supposed to be built.
You want PR to fool people into submitting their sites to your directory? Thats weird. Why dont you explain that they coud submit to a PR 0 site and get the same result.
