Weird, weird behaviour

    Hi guys

Historically we'd always been ranked 1st or 2nd for our main desired keyphrase.

    We concentrate on www.google.co.uk searches

We were hit bad around 3 months ago, and fell down to 6th at the worse time.

After some hard work, we then about a week ago, went back to 2nd, then 1st. I was delighted.

However I've just checked again, and we've fell to 10th.

This hasn't effected our other keyphrases though!

Given the stability, and rather static movement of our rankings for this keyphrase historically, I find it really odd we can go from 1st to 10th so dramatically.

Our backlinks have stayed just about the same.

It's almost as if a spamtrap has been twigged. All I've been doing is submitting to directories. No change has been made. We update content just about daily, and we write good honest content.

No SEO sitewise has been made. No tweaks. Just new content and new backlinks.

Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour before?

I have experienced similiar things with my blog.

I think it is common to get a movement when G finds new links and index them. Wait for 4/5 days and see what happens. Most of the times -old rank is restored.:)

    Thanks buddy.

What would be your personal interpretation on this?

It is a glitch, or does it sound like a penalty of some sort?

I've worked with *new* sites before and had this.

However this is for a 4 and a half year old established domain. Quite literally, this is for a keyphase that we've been working on for 5 years.

The movement is always very very small.

To go from first to tenth, I've never come across.

I have seen the same thing here,

We where 1st for a very competitive keyword the we dropped to 11th, the keyword was actually a variation of a word and the exact word is not in any of our backlinks, so i guess thats why we dropped.

However we have made many gains elsewhere and our traffic is up 200%!!!

Google is messing around with many different algorithams at the moment and it wont settle for a while, but the main focus seems to be on keywords in backlinks, internal linking and lots of unique content.

Keep doing the good staple stuff and you wont be sorry at the end of it.

Same here. Many changes on our primary search term. I keep up with it on a daily basis. I am seeing unquestionable changes in results for a term with high volume.

I am noticing changes every few minutes in the top ten results

please remember that search engines change and alter their algorithm's all the time, so one day your site is going to be perfectly in line with what Google is looking for, then when they change their algorithm your site is not quite perfect and drops a few places.

thats what search engine optimization is all about. constantly optimizing your website to match goggles algorithm to keep your ranking at the top. even so - position 10 is still a bloody good result. well done.

You have to remember also your competition may be also competing for the same keywords as you and be pushing themselves up in the ladder which will of course juggle things around
