Whats worse is that more than 300,000 innocent Iraqis have died and almost all of them are in an uncertain situation facing an uncertain future.

the loss of life in iraq is too awful to contemplate but an overnight withdrawal would be catastrophic. 'the iraq commission report' headed by lord ashdown and baronness jay outlines the need for a gradual withdrawal with a possible peacekeeping force put in place. though the temptation is great we can no longer keep banging on about how wrong it was to go to war, the damage is done, and we must now try to help iraq make sense of the mayhem.
one big problem facing the whole area is that there are increasing numbers of iraqi refugees now seeking refuge in other countries, to date iran, syria, and some other neighbouring countries have borne the brunt of this but the commission is calling upon the affluent countries of the west to play their part.
iraq is not some backwater of the world, it has it's own national product and an educated population, with everyone pulling together it should stand a chance.

that is bad, especially when fellow muslims are the ones killing them all in the name of Allah...if we could get these terrorists to stop, then this war on fascism would be over with...

I think the only mistake in this war was to have underestimated the aim of Islam in general.

Was thinking the same thing. Since when did anti-America muslims *really* care about US soldiers and why do they never mention the boat load of muslims killing Iraqis day in and day out?

As if a muslim gets a pass for blowing up women and children every day. If they were sincere, we'd be seeing more posts from them like "why are my brothers killing innocent muslims in Iraq?"

    Not a peep though.

    What next?
Many are dying in the battle field.
If the next war begins then a huge blast and a huge slaughter.

we seem a bit confused here, which is understandable, for iraq is a complex country, with shi'ite muslims in the south, sunni muslims, some still loyal to saddam, around baghdad, and kurds who are ardent nationalists (for kurdistan that is) in the north - oh and they are also sunni muslim but please don't mix them up with those around baghdad. with me so far. right, now, because of the vacuum caused at the end of the war and the sheer incompetence of those in charge of the allied forces, too much time and opportunity was given to those wishing to fill the vacuum with their own idea of how to rule the roost, bolstered by insurgents from iran and syria, to name just two, though palestinians are probably in the mix. which all results in a nation on the brink of a bloody civil war . simply killing those insurgents the allies can catch, which is not many, is not the answer, in fact killing is not the answer period.
the time has come to get everyone round a negotiating table, bad and good alike, even those insurgent groups known to have killed civilians, and to start a very difficult but hopefully productive, peace process.
in the meantime we need to stay there and prop up the iraqi security forces until some king of peace keeping force is put in place.
this has to be uncomfortable and ugly, there is no other way round it.

Americans knew this and still voted that idiot back in, so my sympathy is a bit limited.

You would think more people would have spoken up when attacking Iraq was first brought up. You know, questions like - "why are we going to attack a country that had nothing to do with 9/11?"

    and

"shouldn't we be using our resources towards finding Osama and fighting Al Quada, instead of attacking a country that had done nothing recently against the US."

well better late than never to wake up and smell the coffee

I do feel sorry for the young american soldiers who died. They had trust in their leaders, naively believing they were somehow fighting 'terrorists'. The bush leadership failed them and their families, terribly.

Congress authorized the use of Military Force to enforce UN Resolutions.

They did not authorize war, and they did not authorize nation building.

While it is tragic that the casualty rate is soo high. I do believe it's too late to pull out now. If we did the whole country will just crumble into civil war and god knows what that will lead to.

A pullout now could lead to World War 3. The US should have finished the job in 1991. That would have been good.

The religious battles have been going on for over 1,300 years, I don't think our 160,000 troops can stop them... Even with us in Iraq, they're still fighting and blowing each other up...

    Why should we pull out?
    1) Save US troop lives
    2) Send forces to Afghanistan to find Osama (the guy that killed 3,000 US civilians)
    3) Maintain our national guard in the US, like it's supposed to be
    4) Start rebuilding our military readiness, so we can maintain the ability to defend our own country
... Just to name a few...

Good job, you saved me the effort :)

They (way more than 50% of Iraqis) 100% hate our occupation, and have every right to want us to leave.

    • Our being there causes and perpetuates a sense of mayhem
