the whole issue with this, is that u can work your ass off, and one day Google, will just de- indexed your site or something happen with your pages , etc. it does not depend on you.

this is prevelent in any field, not just on the net!

MySpace: ....loads of community sites biting the dust!
Pixel sites: .... around 4,000 came up, few survived!
youtube: ... loads of video sites licking what youtube leaves!
wikipedia: ..... loads of wiki's around waiting for traffic!
flickr: .... loads of pic sites on dedicated servers, waiting for that upload button to be clicked,..... most of them (owners) upload their family photos, and feel satisfied of their own sites!

you cant really say the industry is bad, coz a few (thousand) failed!

its if your product is just an off-the-shelf script, its bound to fail,..... doomed b4 u start it,

and again if u build directories for serps and PR!..... ur doomed again, build it for the user, keeping the serps in mind, .....and ull be rewarded like wise!

the thing is about directorys, yeah ok they are counted as link farms apparently but i still want my link in them to improve rankings
