    hi

i have a proxy site recieving about 2000 uniques daily and there is not really any peak load time.i recieve visitors round the clock

i am looking to get a VPS for my needs. please tell me will this configuration be sufficient for my needs??

128MB RAM (the hosting company i asked specifically told me that proxies will not even work for less than 256RAM. i think it was just a tactic to gain more revenue so that i choose a costly plan. why do u say? )

5 MBPS line. - (dont really know will that be sufficient or not. please suggest)

i will not be running Cpanel on it. just LXADMIN which i believe is a lighter panel

ur opinion in this regard will be highly appreciated

    thanks

From what I have read proxies are pretty heavy resource users. That is why they are not allowed so many places.

Lx will use 20-40 mb if you stay with lighty and about 20 more mb if you need Apache.

I suspect you will need the 256 package.

I use PHProxy for my proxies...I have 1GB of RAM and it is typically 40-70% used up

5 Mbps is pretty good, more than enough...that's roughly 1.5 TB of monthly bandwidth

Are you using a control panel like cpanel?

Just trying to help the OP get all the details. CPanel uses about 190-200 MB.

No, I don't use any panel

I use the bare Apache...I use SSH to add vhosts and all that good stuff

There's no reason to use a control panel if you are familiar wtih SSH because you'll be bottlenecking your server with a control panel

Anything less than 256 is most likely a no go. I certainly would not want to try anything less than 256 running a dynamic website myself. Even at 256 with that much traffic you would likely have to know how to optimize your server so that it is using the least amount of resources for your purposes.

I would try 256 and make sure you optimize it. Many VPS providers have near instant upgrade processes if you need to get something bigger.

and what are the normal prices that u consider fit for a vps of
    5MBPS unmetered + 256MB ram??

also, is 192MB dedicated ram + 512MB ram burstable ram sufficient?

I'm not sure if your talking about my hosting but the VPS plan 128 isn't good enough for proxies with some traffic. If your proxy has little traffic it will work. Otherwise you need the 256 minimum.
