Hope she is well, thats too bad. Judging from her pictures she looks like a nice woman. But she also may be a little naive about a single Western woman roaming around alone an foreign and or Islamic country. She may have been seen as easy prey, or deserving of some punishment. Not meant to insult your country but we lose a lot of people that way who do not understand. Of course we lose a lot of people in our own by equally disturbing incidents. Your concern for her though is appreciated by her family.

Single girl traveling along in this day and age is always a risk. I really do hope she is found safe and alive! hugs to her and her family.
I would at least make sure that the local police dont forget the case. Like write them a letter. A letter from a syrian could make more impression than a letter from an US citizen.
