first 2 questions depends on the stats, if you can provide.

Well Google has the market share between the search engines and from my experience certain niche and keyword queries perform better in Google, while more generic keywords/phrases perform better with MSN or Yahoo.

As far as it regards the PPC marketing, you should monitor where your clients ads are appearing with AdSense, maybe their ads are appearing in the wrong sites (MFA's or non relevant sites). Working out with that it might help and explain everything.

    1) Google has twice the traffic of Yahoo and 4 times the traffic of MSN
    2) I haven't advertised much on adcenter or YSM, but i would guess that there are less advertisers which means less competition, which means lower cost-per-click = better return on investment. You should look at your stats and data to figure out the answer.
    3) see answer to Q1

Yes probably the keyword research has not been done properly and you might be ranking for the keywords either very few search or none at all.

    Vista,

its all a function of market share. What country are you targeting? What are the relative market shares of the three main engines?

I have the same problem. I am getting decent traffic from Google, but very little from Yahoo and MSN. I am also looking to increase traffic from these 2 search engines but don't know how to do it.

I agree with BILZ here. Yahoo also seems to have "less sophisticated" users so highly technical products don't perform as well as the impulse consumer products like ringtones.

Here's some data on search engine market share:

    Good luck.

Just to clarify - that is for the US only. Do you have any stats for the world?

For eg, some countries barely use Google, even if they are techy (South Korean for eg) and there are other countries where Yahoo is visited much more than Google (Japan for eg).

Well there is a couple of factors. Over the last couple years I have watched Google steadily gain in market share. I have one site that is ranked equally number 1 in all three search engines, and the vast majority of clicks are coming from Google, which is just a reflection of the fact that people just search Google more.

BUT, I haven't seen the stats for the number of advertisers in a long time-- 2 years ago, Google had over 250,000 advertisers, while Yahoo who started years earlier had only 100,000 and that includes the Overture purchase plus all the marketing they did. Meanwhile Google is growing like crazy.

So now at this point, with adwords there are at least double the advertisers, but also a lot more traffic. So my opinion is, Google is overhyped and clicks are more expensive, but if you need the traffic you have to go there. If you are looking for pure ROI, go to Yahoo and MSN, or you can go to Google first, tweak the campaigns and really find which keywords give you the highest ROI, then roll those campaigns out to yahoo and msn, and forget about Google. (unless of course you really need more traffic)

My data on this is a little dated, but you can look at Googles quarterly reports and ferret out the number of adwords advertisers vs yahoo, and see what level of parity there exists. Google might be much more than 2 to 1 over yahoo right now in terms of advertisers.

So basically you are looking at 1)hype 2)traffic 3)balance of number of advertisers at each search engine=cost you actually pay per click

Also yahoo has been working really hard to catch up to google, added negative keywords on accounts and a few other things, so their targeting
used to be really in the toilet but has been getting better lately.

I've noticed that with google, there's a lot of keywords where there are so many advertisers its just ridiculous, but the same guys don't stay in the game very long. So depending on the client, you just have to juggle these factors depending on what is the most optimum.

Well the keywords may be having different market share in different search engines as an example there might be a keyword which 100 people would be searching for in a day on Google and for the same keyword the no. of searches in Yahoo may be very less or not at all.

Yup. I agree with most of them. Although, it could be more expensive but I guess the reward would be good too. Google has become a house-hold name for surfers and all sorts of traffic that would want to check out new sites to see if they could cash-in on them. But this doesn't mean that you will pour in all your efforts to Google alone.
