Hello, I've been doing development work (mostly php/MySQL) for the last few years. Recently I took it upon myself to create a couple of my own websites instead of doing dev work for others. Just a hobby really. One of my sites is a site that allows people to grab a snippit of code and put on their website. My site manages data coming in and massages it, puts it in a database, then reports the findings. It's basically a script for webmasters to display specific referrer data on their sites. I need to promote this site. Currently the script is getting over 1.1 million page views per day. But my rankings and other info is just awful. I rank higher than 200,000 on Alexa and lower than another site that does the same things (though they're doing it for profit and a sneaky way) I can't figure out how to get the site listed in the DMOZ. I thought I figured it out about 6 months ago, but I'm still not listed. In fact, I can't even find a page to submit the site anymore. The instructions tell me to drill down to the exact topic, but when I get there there is no submission form, or link to one. My question is this; With the recent drop in directory usage, is this something I should even be concerned with? I feel like I'm missing the boat on this area.
First off theirs many ways off building your "backlinks" and free and paid review directories are some off the best as far as im concerned.(only some have been under the gun)... many more are NOT affected. You should also be submitting your site to social bookmarks as well as articles, rss feeds, press releases and many other forms of advertising or backlink building to help your site. DMOZ will take you months if your lucky enough to have an editor choose your site then add it. Submit and forget with DMOZ .... thx malcolm
Forget DMOZ, its a bit of a no go zone. Try submitting to many quality paid directories, you should see your rankings rise.
Hmm. Interesting info. I wasn't expecting this. I will do some research, but how exactly do you know if the paid directory you use is good or bad?
If ur getting 1.1 million views a day, it's pretty much promoted. I don't think you need to worry any more about promotion. Ur up there with quantcast, and stuff, so you've got a pretty big operation going on.
Don't waste your time with DMOZ, it will take like forever if you are expecting to get listed in there. Submitting to quality, paid web directories owned by some of the members here will be well worth your time, I guarantee you.
