That's just it. I can't think of a way they could be detected. How can you detect something if it has no distinguishing characteristics? How do you distinguish a pattern when there isn't one?

Since the in-post plugin leaves no evidence of TLA on the site as far as Google can see, how could they possibly know it is a paid for link?

    LOL! Now that's funny.

Did you read my post above ?

ALL THEY ( google ) has to do is look for that xml FILE that TLA runs from.

Why does everyone think google is sooo dumb?

    SundayBrew, agreed.

Sadcox, don't you upload a file to your server using TLA?

I've never used it but I was under the impression you upload a specific name file, well if that was the case - BINGO! Google can track the links.

I think google can detect some site that using xml file from TLA and give penalties to the site, while other who are not using it will not detected by google, so maybe that's why some site dropped their visitor while others are still constant..
    maybe..
I use TLA for about 3 month, the first three months are OK, but this early sept, my traffic suddenly decrease,..

    SundayBrew,

Did you read MY post above (any of the three)?

Yes, but not a .xml file in the root. If you are using TLA's IN-POST plugin for wordpress, there IS NO .xml file in your root directory from TLA, only a .php file in the plugin directory of your wordpress installation, which can easily be blocked with robots.txt.

Interesting, anyone using TLA? I've been using them as advertiser but consider dropping them because of the XML file Google could find on publisher machines. Not sure ...

I am using TLA (as a publisher) on Wordpress blogs. TLA provides a plugin with a publisher ID (no XML file), and advertisers can purchase links from within blog posts on the exact anchor text phrase they choose.

So if you want to advertise for "monkey brains", you can search on TLA for blog posts in their network that contain that exact phrase and purchase the link.

That's my original question--I can't figure a way that this could be detected. There are literally tens of thousands of organic links on most blogs. How can Google distinguish them from paid links without the presence of a file they can locate?

after one week removing TLA, now my visitor is back.. and my search engine position for certain keyword already back in first position..
I think we must think twice to use xml TLA code in our site,
it can drop your traffic up to 90%..
now I will remove xml file forever, even yesterday the admin of TLA emailed me asking about not displaying TLA ads in my blog..
well, it better I loose $70 each month than loosing 90% of my traffic..

DON'T USE XML FILE TO DISPLAY TLA ADS
or you will get penalty from google..

Google is definately after the link brokers and TLA being a leader hit the most.

I would say if TLA want to continue with their business. They should automatically insert nofollow to all text links bought/sold. This would atleast mean that they are legitimate advertisers in google's eyes.

I dont see any other way for TLA to get out of this mess.

It doesn't make any sense to penalize the ad publishers. Penalize a publisher, and the advertiser will move to another publisher.

Penalize the advertiser and he will leave TLA.

the TLA admin want me to put back the xml feed, because the already sold 4 spot in my blog,
but I can't put it back, because it can hurt my blog, so I decided to add the 4 sold link manually without using their xml feed. So I just add link of 4 ads.
    but this is for temporary
and I ask the admin to give me the good way out, but if they can't answer it for 4 days, I will remove the ads link again forever..
maybe I loose money by not displaying tla ads, but I will loose more if I displaying TLA ads again.

I have been using TLA for a few months now. I have 7 out of 8 spots sold out.

No negative effects for me. My Google traffic is increasing every month. :D.

I think you are not using xml feed from tla..
just use using xml feed from TLA to display the ads,
you will see the result after two month,
    come on...
just use the xml feed sachin... :)
and we give us the result after 2 month..
I wish your blog still fine.. but if not, don't blame me.. I already tell you before :)
