PR provides a nice quick summary of how popular a site is. That's about it.

What if they extend the update periods to say once a year? Wouldn't that help to weed out lots of the paid link back techniques which distort the quality of PR?

I don't even bother about page rank anymore. As you people already know that on webmasterworld forums people gave suggestions on removing that Green bar from toolbar and I think that google is considering that seriously. We should stop bothering about pr and focus on other important aspects of seo.

Google via Matt Cutts has already stated quite clearly that there is nothing special about .edu or .gov or DMOZ links. And as for Alexa, we don;t need Google to tell us how worthless that is.

    Reasons Are Simlpe:

    Universities Websites
    Bank Websites
    Hosting Websites

If PR drop for this sites how would you know that this sites worth or can be trusted?

Who would want to know that? So if Cambridge University website had no PR people would not trust it? PR is only really used by a bunch of webmasters.

    1. PR has little or nothing to do with trust.

    2. I highly doubt that most people visiting university or banking sites even know what PageRank is and they wouldn't care if they did.

    3. Do you honestly believe Harvard University or any major bank cares for even a second about the PageRank of their web pages?

ok lets say they dont care, and someone clone one of the above sites
create a domain cambridgeuniveristy.com (pimp the domain with a couple of PR7) search google for cambridge university, the bomb appears instead of the original domain
    what would then happen?

It wouldn't, don't you think Google is a little smarter than that? Plus PR doesn't equal SERPS

First of all you said this:

    Then you said:

So you are really contradicting yourself there... How can you trust PR when even according to you anyone can "create a domain cambridgeuniveristy.com (pimp the domain with a couple of PR7)". That clone will also end up having a nice PR.

PS: I want to see you try and beat Cambridge University though :p It's not as easy as throwing a few high PR backlinks at it.

SERPs are weekly even daily calculation of you PR
Try pimping a warez site with a PR7 and you will get your answers in traffic and emails in just a couple of days
downloads will appear above amazon results and in some cases above the original developer of the software emails from software developes will fall like rain

    and this is my experience

i dont see a reason to beat cambridge but amazon yes!

SEO or improving SERPs involves a lot of different things including onpage and offpage techniques. Backlink development is a major factor (offpage). PR is an indicator, result of your linkbuilding. One of the ways to improve SERPs is to develop your backlinks from related sites, not throw PR at it.

So can you show me your website that ranks first for a competitive keyword?

    Yeah I have analytics too
    [IMG]

But as a site gets older the traffic and its sources become mush more predictable and you are much less at the mercy of SEO. Do you still google digital point every time you want to come here?
