search engine friendly urls - absolute truth

im currently working on my .htaccess file so i can use apache mod_rewrite module.

i think i will manage to make all the url's of my website "friendly". still i have some questions. my questions are pretty simple:

1 - shall i expect to get more pages indexed after i make my urls friendly?
2 - shall i expect to get more traffic after i make my urls friendly?

or is it just to be "nice" to search engines?

also tell us about your particular experience with improving a particular website to search engine friendly url's.

    thanks for sharing :)

It will help if they include your keywords, but it will not be a deciding factor.

This technique is one of numerous elements which add a little lift.

Using seo friendly links is just an overall good idea.

    As per your questions:

    1) I don't know whether it has any significance in major search engines unless you're using a query string with a lot of variables: somefile.php?id=12334&p=restw5er&i=89wwe&t=239329&l=skdfhi38 etc.

    2) I would say yes, cautiously.

A SE friendly url is also user friendly, it gives them an idea of what the page is about (has much more meaning than an ugly query string) & may increase clickthroughs from the SERPS if your page happens to rank highly for a search term.

I believe, as do others, that not only the domain name, but the page names themselves count as incoming anchor text for your website/webpage. This means that keyword focused page names (se friendly URL's) will help with the keyword targeting of your webpage.

1- yes-more pages, but it depends on many more factors
2- that's a wrong question- it depends on your SERPS for the keywords. having said that- take in account that if all pages scan by the robot you will gain their inner links count as well.

It depends on how many paramaters. If you have more than 2, then making them se friendly will help to get them indexed.

I have been under the impression that, besides friendlier urls, database driven sites can be difficult for SEs to index and mod_rewrite can "brings the pages out of the database" making them easier to index. I'm asking because I was about to start a thread asking for help for a Wordpress forum script which has no mod_rewrite.

    Sure Megafu

If one got a three-level web site structure, when level three has 1000 pages with correct links to the two levels above those 1000 pages link weight (keywords and mass) will affect more then two level site structure with 7 pages…
Home page – level 1 – one page – low keyword density
    Categories – level 2 – 6 pages – medium keyword density
    Articles – level 3 – 993 pages – higher density

You don't want flat (S.E readable) structure of inner link (all to all) because importance of your desires optimized pages reduce and the weight is not focused on specific pages.

    1. It depends on the amount of pages that you have. I don't think it will be 'more' pages, as in 'faster' indexing.
    2. I had some keywords in page title and <h1>. I was in the SERP #3. Now that I added the keywords to my URL, i jumped to SERP #1 (1st page).

it will allow the search engines to index your pages easier, because if you have lots of characters in your domain name or page titles, some search bots give up and dont include that page in the index so it will help you to work on it

I was using a host for the website of a client and organic search traffic was pretty low.

I moved them to my own hosting and the organic search traffic shot up by almost 20% between Google re-indexing the website.

And that was before I started to fool around with .htaccess file.

So the set-up of your hosting can have a major impact, too. Especially if they're throttling the spiders...

You add keywords in your url. Its very helpful to increase traffic and ranking to your site.
