Adsense In Forums Tip

    This tip is aimed at those new to adsense...

    Ok, so I run a pretty moderate size community and have been with adsense since it started.

    Just recently i decided to only show adsense to guest (easy switch in VB). So members do not see any ads but the ones I may sell directly.

    The profits have remained the same even though all other numbers have fluctuated, ie CTR, Traffic, CPM.

    Not only does the forum look 100% better without the ads (when logged in).. it gives the non members a reason join and log in...

    Are you going to reach your goal for 2007? I'm almost there.. Good Luck

    I've been doing this from the beginning, and i think the members really appreciate it..
    Can I ask what you consider a "moderate size community"? how many members, how many unique visitors per day?

    you can do it with SMF, i just did a week ago... What I do is slightly different... I have created special groups called "super posters" for anyone who has posted 200 plus postings.. i change the permissions for those groups so the ads do not show... I also do it for donors and Moderators...

    It's 3 lines of code to add it by hand.

    1. Open your index.template.php file for your theme.
    2. Find the line with template_menu(); on it and insert this right after

    if (! $context['user']['is_logged']){
    /* echo your banner code here */
    }

    You can set the timeout threshold in your SMF AdminCP. Just look under "Edit Features and Options" and set "User online time threshold" to the number of minutes you want. Be aware that whatever you set it to will reflect in the "members online" at the bottom of the forums index.

    What's the earnings like so far? I've also heard about having ad-links under your nav bar.

    it can still be done...

    just find the access levels (i think 0 is guest) and with a little PHP, you'll be done :)
