It seems like paid directories are the only sites experiencing this ranking penalty (whatever is going on).

If google is penalising them there is damned good reasons for it. We all know this and yes it will be the end of what has been described as the "flawed economy" and "unsavoury business practices" but why should it be the end of paid directories?

The only people who know whether it is manual or automatic is within Google itself.

The accusation of manual penalisation comes from the owner of Biz-Dir (which has been knocked)

You didn't read my post properly.

Of course not everybody has been affected. But it will make any potential directory owner think twice before starting a directory if at some unspecified point, after spending much money and time, Google will penalise them.

Things won't change over night, but change will happen gradually over the next couple of years.

Who told you that directories penalized mannualy and who gave u the 60 number ?

Also who makes google stronger ? Google or webmasters and users like us who use google to find out what their sites rank for? Maybe because we all love to use google ? Why not switch to using yahoo or msn search instead. Than lets see how google reacts back. It would be worth seeing how matt cutt and google than battle the traffic drain to other search engines ;)

My directories are paid for reviews and they aren't affected.

I see lots of different issues getting lumped into one. If it was 60 directories affected, this doesn't represent most directories out there.

They key is to examine what those directories that appear to be penalized have in common. And then avoid doing it.

Has google done anything wrong? They have certainly earned my respect and support. Who can honestly fault them? I wont complain even if they do eventually let the bad guys off the hook.

This is correct. I've noticed only a couple of paid directories have been effected by this weird Google thing, still I do believe this is just temporary and they will get back their SERP.

    1. Webmasters don't make Google stronger. Advertisers and regular searchers make Google stronger. So does delivering a better product than any of Google's competitors, at least so far - and I don't mean to webmasters but to average surfers.

    2. Go ahead and switch to Yahoo if you want to. Google won't even blink. There won't be any noticeable traffic drain from Google as a result of a few disgruntled webmasters using Yahoo more often, especially since any webmaster would have to be insane to ignore the huge role Google plays in traffic to any website. Even if you search using Yahoo, you're still going to have to optimize for Google if you want to be successful on the net, and that means you'll still be playing by Google's rules.

    3. Google's rules aren't unfair, except to people who persist in trying to scam or game the system to get an edge on their competitors. Google's rules are determined by search results relevance, not by whatever the webmaster decides is clever SEO.

But all those green blobs couldn't stop you from getting banned. I wonder what happened. Anyone know?
