How does buy sig links help your website?

Please excuse my ignorance, bit of a newbie to all of this.

I was going to ask this in the links forum but dont have enough posts.

If you buy say a siganture and someone has 5000 odd posts, would that mean in effect your buying 5000 links to your website, say on a monthly basis?

Does google pick these signature links up, and does it really make any difference to a website?

Also when for example someone offers a link though 10,000 sitewide pages, is that like having 10,000 links into your website, or does that just help Google cache more of your pages?

Sorry to be a bit thick.

    Cheers

    Drew

You may need to revamp your screen name after asking this question. Be careful and keep your head down. The flames will start rising very soon.

A link is considered by google as a recommendation from a domain not from a page, this answers all your questions.

This is the correct forum to ask your questions in :D

Google counts several of my sig links as backlinks, as does yahoo and I'd assume MSN... so sig links can certainly help there.

But sig links are much more then backlinks. They are cheap advertising and can generate several hits daily if applied correctly. Though I must say that my web related sigs do a lot better traffic wise then my occult sigs ;)

That makes sense, the website I'm setting up is one that sells ethical, fairtrade, and organic products/gifts. I guess by using the sig's for web/directories/seo etc your right in front of your target audience here.

    All makes sense now, thankyou.

I don't believe this is true. The page content and PR are related to the page and that is where the value is to the receiving page. It is Page Rank after all. :)

I cannot honestly make an assertive statement, what I believe is that a domain passes "Trust" and pages pass "Popularity" so many pages COULD be interesting if you are looking for a high PR...

Let me be clearer, what I think is the following:
1- 1 link on a domain gives you X credits according to google
2- 1 link on 120 pages of the same domain gives 1.1X or 2X or even 10X credits but NOTHING CLOSE to 120X credits.

Now what is that credit? I think it is "Trust (TR)" + "Popularity (PR)"

In addition, a domain has (and should) have an approaching subject on all pages, what would then be your interest in getting many links from many pages with the same subject?

The truth is, no one knows the final word on that subject and espacially what weight the PR has when compared to the TR.

    All good points.

I know there is a suspicion that site wide backlinks are questionable about the value.

This would be true on the Google forum. .. domain vs page
It is far more complicated than that.

Some of you guys were wrong to call him effectively dumb for asking a question.
    That was out of order.

There are differnt types and quality of link.
Google favours big high quality links, (or chinese ones!)
Yahoo MSN more quantity of links

Not all links get indexed. In other words, if somone had given 5000 links from having 5000 posts not all these would have been found by the SE spiders
Since they are realy all the same the weight of the link is devalued
Also since they all have the same IP address

Signature links do count as one-way links to your website. If the forum page where your link lies on manage to pull in a High PR, you stand to gain as well.

These are counted as backlinks if google picks up the page but sig links also help you to generate some direct traffic and can also help you in getting your site indexed [ links do help in better indexing ]

Sig links help getting indexed.. If your prepared to wait a few months.

Seriously, do not waste your money buying sig links unless your after click throughs.

Everyone else has covered the subject fairly well so I wont try to say what the purpose of a sig link is. I will just say that you should be careful to get sig links for your site(s) in relevant forums.

In other words if you have a site that is of interest to webmasters then a sig link here will do great. If it is of general interest to everyone then it will do OK. But is it is a specific niche site like home made candles or something like that it will fare less. Of course I am speaking of traffic here and not PR value.

Basically, always try for relevant links.

    Can you rephrase that please?

Any forum sig can potentially help, though forum sigs within your niche help the best. Like I'd have better luck with my magiQtext sig link on my Occult Forum link, as the topics are a match...

When I have an SEO type link in my sig, I generate 4-5 times the traffic I do from my "normal" links so while ANY sig link can help, ones that are relevant help the most.

Though, you should also look at the popularity of the forum. DP has loads of traffic which helps anyway. You should also consider the thread you are posting in as well. An SEO link may do better in an SEO forum then it would in say server administration or something. Heh... like a directory sig link likely won't help much up in the Google forum at the moment ;)
