It's been quoted in this thread several times, but I saved it in my blog for posterity:

    Matt Cutts' Google Update Prediction

And, YES, this is the real Mr. Cutts posting at DP.

Has Google filed any patents recently? Is it pure speculation that an update will be focusing on paid links? Hasn't Matt already stated that Google is pretty good at finding paid links with it's current algo?

Yes it is pure speculation (as these things always are), but based on itelligent assumption IMO.

I think it is clear to most Google watchers that "further" dampening of the paid links "issue" is at or near the top of the agenda down there

Yes - of that there is no doubt. Matt is a member who drops by here infrequently.

I think he only pops in when he wants to buy some links :D

they are working on something big - a major algorithm change to cut the SERPs that have been affected via paid links, and also to re-arrange PR for those who have bought their PR.

I think many webmaster run sites that have not submitted to directories, and have tried to increase PR through buying text links will be really disappointed when they see PR2 instead of PR5.

Has there been any official confirmation that the person posting was Matt Cutts? Is it possible that someone could just be impersonating Matt Cutts, does the IP address (moderator) resolve back to Mountain View?
