Adsense revenue still pretty low on my forums

I know revenue usually drops during the summer months, but it still seems to be pretty low compared with last year. Has anyone else been noticing diminished returns from Adsense compared to last year?

Yes. I have. My earnings have gone down half since the same time last year. And my traffic has increased.

Are your ads blended in by any chance?

Yes, I have the same color background and the ad links are the same color as the links on my page.

But there is a clear distinction between what are ads and what aren't (i.e. sponsored links, breaks between ads and content etc.)

    Why do you ask?

you should test many ctr adsense positions and choose the best CTR unit.try to test them over a period of 1 week min. Also,do not stuff your forum with adsense,it's the same as a blog, you stuff it,ppl will ignore them or leave eventually.

adsense in forums don't do as well as people might think. Depends on your forum obviously but a froum is reaccuring traffic people click once or so but not very often. That's my experience

I was just checking this very closely today, and I also run forums. I spent 2 hours looking at my stats today. August 2006 v/s August 2007 I made 50 percent less per click this August.

While things were down a little for months, a very significant decline for me started August 15. By the end of August it had gotten even worse, and now in September it is still worse. I am now down 60% over what I was making for clicks last year at this time.

So even though my site has gained about 30 percent more traffic over the past year I am making a lot less. I figure by October I will be paying advertisers instead of them paying me.

Any idea why this might be? Are visitors becoming increasingly blind to adsense?

I tried something Sunday but still too early to tell. All forum posters with 200 or more posts and donors are no longer seeing the ads. Regulars like this ignore the ads anyway. My CTR has shot up and the number of clicks appears to be about the same.... Could this higher CTR eventually increase the value of ads on my site (in the eyes of Google), thus bringing me more per click?

I think I have been smartpriced. The ads you see now on my forums were already determined to perform the best (I did a few different tests first with colors that differed from the backgrounds, different link colors etc. etc. and found that using the same background color and same link color worked out well).

Any tips on how to get "un smartpriced" lol?

I've been running the forums for a long time, and it's not like I haven't done testing. I'm just really surpised that my earnings aren't doing as well as they used to and am trying to find out why.

If your CTR is around 1%, you're doing well on placement. If not, try my following tips for ad placement.

    -Leaderboard under nav bar
-Box ad or leaderboard under the first post
-Banner or leaderboard under the last post

I achieved a 1-2% average CTR with those placements.

    Good luck :)

Just curious, thought that might be the reason why.

Yah, I have been seeing those CTR's and they came about after doing all of the changes I had tried only to settle with what I have now. So I know the placement is not the issue, that's the one thing I've done a good job at imo.

Oh, I thought that for some reason they'd give less money if the ads blended in the background or something lol (highly doubted that would be the case though, but wanted to ask anyway).

So no one has any ideas on how to get "Un smart priced"?
