http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-08-31-voa44.cfm He seems like an interesting character, but I'm wondering if he is running too late (resources) and his positions seem to mirror a lot of other GOP candidates. Thoughts?
I think his timing is good...these other candidates started so early that most are starting to fade out....I even think shrillary/osamabama are going to fade out after a while as well...We still have over a year to go and I'm already sick of all the ads and the campaigning...I think a fresh face might have a chance if people are already tired of the other candidates.
Fred missed the boat by about 2 months. When he originally said he was going to "think about" running, he gained lots of support. After the months of footsey (will he or wont he), those who initially liked him (myself included) got tired of it. If Fred's start isn't perfect and if he doesn't kick ass in whatever his first debate will be, he's done.

One of his toughest obstacles will be Rudy Giuliani, a man notorious for dirty tactics. To his advantage, many of the things Thompson would be attacked on could also be said about Rudy. For instance, they've both represented some clients as a lawyer and lobbyist that they probably don't want the American people knowing about. It's to their advantage to keep these campaigns clean, because once the mudslinging starts it won't end until the door is open for McCain.
What's funny is, he hasn't officially announced yet (this week though) and has 15 times more support than Ron Paul. Wait, that's not accurate. What's 15 x 0% national support? Heh!
Yeah, but he can't touch Paul on funding or the issues. And that is what is most important to me. Issues. What separates Paul financially from ALL of the candidates is that he is the leading recipient of donations from the military.
wow surprised to hear guerilla is interested in thompson, he's my pick. btw i'd vote for gtech anyday
I could change that...two quick calls and I could easily get someone else a $101 donation from 2 of my friends in the military...then Ron would not be on top...
Paul is the leader on military donations by a large margin. You may think it is funny, but our servicemen and women do not.
He is not too late. He has the fatherly respectable character that many Americans are looking. He displays many of the policies and charisma that was so popular in Ronald Reagan. He got respect even by those who did not agree with his policies. I think Thompson is the best offer by the GOP.
how you do you reoncile that when paul gets like 1% of the support from veterans? leader in military donations, when dealing with small numbers isn't a very impressive number when you look at the big picture.
My personal opinion... I feel that he waited on purpose to seem like the "fresh face" in the race, and to "fill the GOP void"... This way, he was also able to dodge quite a few debates, so people can use less of his words against him, and so that less people will notice that they disagree with him on some stances... His timing may be a little late, but I think there are plenty of people that will jump onto the "Reagan was a movie star too" bandwagon... I forget who it was that said "his poll numbers are peaking now, but they'll drop as soon as he's really running"... I think this is a good possibility too... Conclusion, I have no idea if he'll do good, but I believe he'll have to do something big in order to take the primary from Rudy/Romney...
The support in telephone polls is meaningless to me. It's the people who contribute their after tax earnings, and who show up to rallies, and who travel to straw polls that carry a lot more weight than someone who answers, "Will you be voting, and who will you vote for" to a telephone pollster. After all, when asked if we will vote, most of us will say yes. Come election day, the answer is much different. Thus, we all know a lot of people don't vote. It's the ones who do vote that matter.
This is USA and you must ask yourself would anybody even care that he is running if it wasn't for law & order? He has a good chance of winning because people know him from TV. Too bad the guy who plays the prosecutor in law & order (I think his name is Sam Watson) is not running, otherwise he had even a better chance to become the next president.
