How do you start a directory?

Lets say I use PHPLD and a template and create a directory with a decent domain name.
    Now what?
Do I give away links at first to fill the directory up with some content?
    How do I gain PR?
    Do I require reciprocals?
How much should I charge at the beginning?
    Thanks!

You dont want PR but you need back links. Find a list of free directories, start submitting and once started keep updating every month. Select a category in your directory, one that you know something about and have an interest in and start submitting sites that you consider to be useful. The spider is only going to visit you once a month so one or two new sites a month is good enough. Spend the rest of your time on forums like this getting a handle on the issues and looking for the buyers who are no longer sure where they should be putting their money.

The last thing you want to do is to be seen making chums with the wrong people.

    Promotion and Marketing.

Do I give away links at first to fill the directory up with some content?

Or you can add quality sites to your directory yourself.

    Backlinks,natural backlinks.

    Do I require reciprocals?

    Not a good idea.

You'll definitely have to spend some quality time watching after your directory next after launching it to the public, offer free submissions until the website picks up some speed at least and invite people to submit their listings like others do here on DigitalPoint and not only.

When I first opened up my directory, I posted here stating I was accepting all links for free in my directory without reciprical, it then got flooded with around 500 links to sift through. You can pick and choose the links you would like to publish, this way you can get some content

If spiders only visit once a month then why is my sites their hangout any time day or night I have google, yahoo or other bots on my sites hours at a time

@ Op just start slowly building up your backlinks and adding good resources and you will gain pr offer reciprical or 3 way reciprical also you can always start out charging a low fee and raise it when you feel the time is right

Read what I was saying as no need to stress. Google does things slowly. You can too. A couple of quality listings every week or every month or whenever is more than enough to keep them happy. The rest of the time you have available can be spent looking for buyers.

    Thats incorrect

I strongly suggest that you spend a couple of weeks reading as many threads as you can

Even for a new site, Google is a quick as a flash in indexing and caching if you do it the right way

As for what the right way is ?

Well, if you're willing to do the work, its all out there in the various threads, and what "britishguy" told you

Read as many threads as you can, and see why people started and why people got out of the dir business. also I would not charge at first for basic links, Just dont go out and spend bunches of money without a plan

A fool and his money are soon parted in this game. Dont spend any till you know what you are doing and you can see your plan beginning to work. Today is very different from yesterday and there are a lot of directory masters who re going to have to do a rethink.
