I don't think I understand your point. My personal opinion on the topic means nothing. I was simply warning people about how Google would eventually respond.

Keep in mind that Google has been saying they're going after paid links for the better part of a year now.

There is nothing at all wrong with that viewpoint. The only thing that matters is whether or not each directory owner is willing to take a similar stance in the face of almost certain penalties, as Google will not sit idly by forever. That has always been my point.

Yes, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they will get better and better at doing so. You'd be amazed at what type of algorithms a company can develop with the backing of BILLIONS of dollars.

    ...BIG DIFFERENCE

I don't know why people always equate directory listings to be the same as the paid links Cutts talks about. Can anyone share some insight on this with me? Am I missing something?

I would be amazed because so far their algo doesn't appear to be that great at it. I still see plenty of paid links (from huge companies) ranking on tons of keywords.

I'd experienced this before with one of my site (non-directory) www.osx-e.com last year. At that time, seems like most of site that using DP co-op, linkvault are losing ranking and my site which have almost 100 keywords on google first page before are no where to be seen on top50. Infact when I search for my site name its ranked at 31.

I'd suffered for 1 year before my ranking is back to normal but I haven't do anything. Most of sites that are affected removed dp co-op but I'm still running them right now. So I totally have no idea what might cause the penalty.

So with a lot of negative talk about directories now its not surprise if google impose the same penalty to most directories here like what they did before. And from my experience, it would take at least 6 months before its back to normal again no matter what you do.

june 27 last year, everybody was hit big time. my serps went back on september 27, I removed link vault but changed nothing, it has been stable now for almost a year.
I don't know if it is the same thing here as most of the affected sites are directories.

If a site does not ranks for its title(which is not in competition with other websites) then I would say Google is the worst Search Engine.

Why they want to penalise a site in first case?

It doesn't rank, not because google can not find it or judge that it should be placed on top. one cause might be it is penalized. They do penalize sites in their index when they do not follow their guidelines. it is their index after all.

Even if that were true, they are also far and away the biggest. It's not like you can ignore Google, is it?

If it's any consolation, I don't think Google holds you in very high esteem, either.

Sorry. That's just a dumb question. And if you don't know the answer to that question, there is really no point in you even trying to participate in the discussion.

One thing I cant understand, if paid links is the only issue, then why few directories have suffered, why not all ?

I have been asking this too since I was a child.

Why are people being sent to heaven ?
Why are people being sent to purgatory ?
Why are people being sent to hell ?

Then in World War II the Jews ask the same questions why the Jews only suffered why not the Chinese and "Filipinos" too.

Mysterious ain't it ? I guess we would never know. But for now I sure wanna go line dancing to the tune of Miss Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" instead of pulling the rope of Babylon.

    ;)

Hahaha Ramanean don't you think I know that ? I read Marvel Comics a lot so I guess I have an idea.

If you can read between the lines or do some lines of reading you will know for sure. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=4345911&postcount=31

Meanwhile the report paid links is there and anyone can use it to his or her own benefits without someone knowing.

I am going to the the graveyard now and will be expecting the dead to pull me to the grave too. :D

    See you all there. :D

I was asking what's the need to penalize these sites as they have not done any thing wrong,(Not Copied content, no copy rights violation etc.,)they have bought links only for traffic. And also they should remember there also some other search engines...

I think it's their algorithim that needs fine tuning!

I would say Google's algorithm mainly depended upon organic natural links at first they would not have thought about this in 1998 ,now they would be having a long relook at this!
