The title of this is just pure BS. "It's official" sure it beckons attention but its a million miles from official. So stuff is geting dropped from the serps doesn't mean its official or permanent.

I'd like to see them take care of DMOZ - it may or may not be the root of the directory evil, but it sure need some cleaning up. DMOZ is great but right now the way its being run is getting out of hand.. I better stop typing now before my sites "suddenly" vanish from DMOZ...

It's official. Some directories win, and some lose. The main thing is to get back up, dust yourself off, and keep on working.

History tells us there will always be change in any feild, those with the ability to adapt and change will prosper, those who can not adapt to change, or wish to worry about it will suffer.

Came to what conclusion? That people who own directories need to work. That's official, baby.

I was actually mocking the thread title. I guess the sarcasm was misunderstood .

Recently I have done a spot of link building. I have been listing my site many in paid/free directories, blogs, bookmarking sites as well as writing many business articles. In the mornings I generally receive a Google alert email informing of the links Google has added. Out of whole batch of new Google updated links not one was for a directory.

Like many others I have heard the rumours that paid directories will be taking a hit. However I didn’t think there was any use acting on a simple rumour. Threads like the PR update one here have certainly not helped our cause, it is so obvious that most directory owners are desperate to get their PR raised just to make money, not provide a decent service to their customers. Then you throw in the fact that most internal directory pages have a PR of 0, there is no surprise Google is taking action. This certainly could be the death for bidding directories, if paying large sums of money for a listing on a PR7 homepage is devalued, is their any point.

One thing is for sure directories have been targeted for a while, you only have to look at a submission list from 6-12 months ago, the ones that display PR, when visiting these directories over 90% have dropped in the rankings.

I have now stopped submitting to any directories, I will concentrate on link building from other sources.

As for our directory as it is only a bolt on to our existing business I have no problems in removing it, although I would rather not as a lot of work has been put in.

I will wait till the dust settles

The problem with 90% of people on this forum is that they worry to much about crap they can do absolutely nothing about. I understand that some people make a living selling links by pr but if you spend your time writing content then maybe you will get better pr when it happens. You cant make the update come any sooner so quit worrying about it. Google is in charge of millions of peoples careers which means they got us by the BALLS.

Where would you want it ? On your arm, leg or the back or maybe neck :D

Anyways seems like those advertising too much seem to be loosing rankings, i know few directories ranking good still for most of their domain keywords on google.

Could it be google wants to get rid of those who go and buy links from other sites?

Is natural linking going to be the next best thing in line ?

Remove the paid links. And you might want to think about removing the tags like: <meta name="generator" content="PHP Link Directory 3.1.0" />

This makes it really easy to detect you're running a (paid) web directory.

    Also check these things:

    - rename submit.php to something really unique (different)
    - include robots.txt to exclude submit page, search page
    - get more unique written content to each category

    Good luck.

    Google Crawler is a robot.

The Google engineers inserts words and methods to detect websites that they DON'T want into the index, the robot detects this and devaluate the website.

The phpLD meta tag could be an very easy way to detect a web directory.

How is that suppose to mean its a paid web directory ?

We are talking about your comment about paid web directory, not web directory ?

And since when google decided to totally ignore web directories and decide not to index them ? Is google now only gonaa index websites and not directories ? Is that the insider scoop you got from google?

Does this mean days for yahoo directory, dmoz, google directory are all over ? :D:p
