Naruto MMORPG

I own a Naruto MMORPG site (still in development). Do you think it's legal to do this? We aren't getting paid for making this. The Google Adsense money is going towards the server. I just started it as a hobby but now it's got very popular.

They could shut it down very easily as you don't have the right to make money from something you don't own. Why not just change the names of the characters?

the company that owns naruto probably won't sue you even though its infringing on trademarks/copyrights. reason being is that it is promoting their show as well as their products. naruto came to north america because of naruto web sites. the company saw the fan base online and liscned the show.

Thats different. They make money from the licencing.

I think you should change the names.

    Saksuke :p

Thats not too familiar to any one I know in Naruto.

i would say to you to list yourself as a fan site like all the online Naruto download website. They have plenty of ads running on their page and no suing going on.

If it's based on an IP that is owned by somebody else and you don't have an agreement with the owner, then legally they can enforce their ownership and ask you to not use their copyright(s). That's the law and it's pretty black and white when it comes to this area.

However, there are a lot of cases where the parent company of an IP will look the other way or unofficially sanction fan-made projects...a good example are all the "Star Trek" or "Star Wars" fan films that people keep making year after year. Most big companies only get worried when someone starts to make money from one of their properties...like if someone made a fan-made "Star Trek" movie and started charging $5 for every DVD they sold of it on eBay. If you're going to make money from your MMORPG then you're going to be treading more into this area of copyright enforcement.

The best rule of thumb is to look and see what other fan-made projects are out there and how long they have been around. Has the company that owns this Naruto property ever closed down a fan site for using their copyrights before?

I've been thinking about this with the Final Fantasy website I'm making, which has "Final Fantasy" in the domain. But I figure since it's a fan site Square Enix will look the other way. After all there's many similar fan sites and it's not for profiting. Even if it will have ads.

i dont know about you but this conversation is idiotic if you really do wanna make money then put up a donation part of the website 1/10 of the people or 1/20 will donate and give them some special item but not so special that everyone leaves because no one wants to play angainst super strong units and put ads on your site also put up a forum to so its like a fansite that would also work anyways its best to just mark it as a fansite with a forum and keep current updates of the anime naruto and have a donation page =)

I think they will allow you to do it, until your sites gets famous and they take it away from you.

yes well kingofkings the part about that... it can easily be solved if he pays like 25% of the donation money to them and plus using ads and donation doesnt mean they get money even though they do get money its not really because its a donation to the website anyways the main point is that you can just give the owners of naruto part of the money they earn or they can just sell the site to them for money quick and easy
srry for the bad english its not my first second or my third language ....
