he has not used any official logos! so he may get away with it, but then this is kind of childish:eek:, one should try to make one's own brand:)

Boy, I don't know. The Opera Dir one is really pushing it with the classic "O" logo in the directory header.

The Netscape one, while no logos, does use a VERY similar color scheme that the old Netscape browser used.

He certainly is walking a fine line, but its unlikely any of the big names will bother to chase him down, just wouldn't be worth their time.

    hi

well if he gets sued, how much do you think that person has to pay? and why any big company names shouldnt be used? and how about brand names, band names, movie star names in domain? will they get sued if used the above names in domain???

for eg. if I use sonyismylife as a blog.., will I be sued? or operainthehouse as a directory!

How can u tell what keywords he's targetting?

    Ok, I get it now.

The guy has names of known software as part of his directory name.

    Hey, what an idea,

    It works too.

On Google if u type firefox directory it pulls up his site.

probably you are not blind and missed the smiley after the post?

Do you think the OP does not know that his sites rank for "Firefox Directory" ? OP Is also running many good directories but his concern was about copyright

The directories does not seem to have any relation at all with the software names he's targetting, although I think "Opera Directory" is treading a fine line there. Maybe if he had used the Sydney Opera House as a title header he could blur the line there :p

    Trademarks are not universal.

As long as his directories don't interfere with the business interests of these companies, he is fine technically.

However, if any big company sues him, he will mostly likely shut down the directory (directories).

Very few webmasters can actually afford to fight lawsuits against these big players.

Big companies have to sue him - if they don't try to protect their copyright now, they are in a weaker position in later cases. The Opera one is especially dodgy, as the icon is a rip-off and the average visitor could easily mistake it for an official site.

The directories aren't implying they are affiliated with the other companies, so I find it hard to imagine being sued.

To be realistic this person has the brain the size of a pea to even attempt launching these sites, so who really cares what happens to them
It's strictly a no win situation for the jerk who owns these sites

Opera is a common word in the english dictionary, so they will have trouble taking him to court over it, but the others if the companies choose to, will have an easy win.

But if you took that approach then AvivaDirectory would be just as guilty of trying to piggyback off the reputation of AVIVA the insurance Giant? Its the same with many. I seen someone with bransondirectory or simular which was clearly playing on British tycoon Richard Branson, the list would go on and on and yes they are risking getting sued, but of course most of them think they know it all and won't admit to the fact they can.

Ah well, leave em to it I say.

I don't think any of these companies could really care. He will hardly compete with any of them.... I'm off to register alivedirectory2.com :D
