    Hello again,

This post tackles the META tags usage.

There are three attributes for the META tags: content, name, http-equiv

What are we interested in is the name and the content tags.

We use the name tags for different representing purposes:
    keywords, description, author, copyright, robots

What the name represents is included in the content tag:
A sentence/text representing the logical value of the description, keywords, etc..

    Usage:

    <META NAME="descriptive short name" CONTENT="the text">

Google and Yahoo and the other search engines usually if not always read the description tag of the META tags.

    The usage of META description:

    <META NAME="description" CONTENT="the text 'filled with keywords'">

I say filled with keywords because we do not only list some keywords, but put a sentence/s in there.
And have in mind that the description sentence should REALLY describe the content of the page text.
This means that GREAT description with no content will not give the BEST effect.

Only for keywords listing we use:

    <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="keyword1, keyword2, keyphrase1, etc...">

These are the basic (and enough) information to get started with the META tags.

I hope this is helpful information even thou it's pure HTML scripting.

Green reps and comments are appreciated.

    Regards

How many words do you think the keyword METa tag should contain?

How about the page title and description tag?

I was told no more than 1000, Some of my competitors have far fewer others have as many as 3000. I would love to know a consevative number too.

A 1000 words? That sounds like a lot! I though ~50 was average, haha! But I have no clue really.

I use around 100 on average for description.
1000 is a bit to many right?

    Hello,

I apologize for not responding soon enough.

Concerning the question I would totally disagree with the above. Why? Because there is not topic for which you can include 1000 words except maybe for a dictionary (just include portion of the words supported) :).

The story is very simple. Go to Google. Search for any word and look into the first five listed in their META keyword tag. I saw no more than 10 keywords. Some of them do not even use the keyword tag.

I hope you get the point.

    hello,

what the fact you are selling a report has to do with this thread?

Does it says something about the number of keywords in the META tags?

Nice post, thanks for sharing. I read (i think on w3c) that it's a good idea to use <strong> over <b> when you want to show importance for semantic purposes. Just worth noting.

    hi,

give prime keywords in title tag, so that only by reading your title the reader will understand your website.

in case of meta description try not to put only keywords and phrases, but try to insert an unique description by using those keywords and phrases.

i don't think its spam to make your major keywords italic, bold or underlined. don't make all your keywords and phrases bold or italic. try to make bold or italic for your selected and significant keywords and phrases

    Hi,

I do agree that w3 is recommending to use the <strong> over <b>. Experts in the field are also recommending that we have to use CSS for each style in the text (instead of the good old fashioned <b>, <i>, <u>, <p>, etc...). I do agree on this one, to move further, but what about the SEO. For us, working on SEO, we know that we have to use some style in the text in order to go higher. SEO do not read the CSS file and than find which of the words are styled as bold for example.

And about Reflection's comment - I agree. The best thing by my opinion is to have a nice sentence or a tiny paragraph where you really describe your page content. Then you have to use your writing skills and use the keywords as part of the description.

I hope I cleared some points in this post.

    Thank you!

    Let's go further! :)

I was also thinking about the idea that it is better to put your main keywords somewhere at the begging and the bottom of your page.

Trying to find a solution I am proposing the following:

I am taking the key phrase example: "Cotton unisex clothes".

So, the page title can be:
The best cotton unisex clothes selling store
    or
    Selling cotton unisex clothes

We will use similar and more descriptive sentence in our description attribute and possibly define our keywords in our keywords attribute.

Than, we will include our key phrase in the text somewhere, but what about the end?

If the whole topic of our web site is: cotton unisex clothes, than we can include in the very end, next to the copyright mark our business sentence:

    business name .com C 2007
    best cotton unisex clothes

Like this we solved the problem with having our keywords at the very bottom of our page and not making it look like spam.

P.S. If we use our keywords more often, I recommend to rethink of the keywords attribute usage since we will give the SE an idea of our keywords and show it that we have made a certain SEO.

    Green reps are appreciated.

    Regards

Yes, keep the keywords 5%-10% in your content and not stuff keywords.

Through the SE point of view description should be 160 to 180 caracter and title should be 69 caracter.
