In the past few weeks, you have seen few threads where “hosting†became the problem for directory owners. You might also have noticed me, recommending “HostingZoomâ€. Well, things are going to change from today. I apologies if anyone has signed up with them because of my recommendation. I started getting some serious problem with them on 28th August when I noticed my log is getting filled with error messages. After getting a close look, it turns out that I am getting killed by there server due to exceeding my limit of “resource usageâ€. After spending more than 48 hours and my best effort to sort out this issue with them, I am deeply disappointed with their efforts and responses I have been getting for my tickets. They cant handle my directory even when at this time, I only have 644 categories and 200 active links. I am getting “Internal Server Error†message when trying to download 7MB of DB backup. (In .zip format it’s just 660kb). I am getting error message when there are bots crawling the directory. And I am getting error message even when I am working on phpLD ACP. I even got complains from few users. So, if you plan to run a directory with HostingZoom, you are going down. Their support wouldn’t provide a "Detail" log as to what kind of limit you were hitting. And they will just ask you to move to “Dedicated serverâ€. Be very sure not to use HostingZoom if you are running a web directory. PS. Best Web Directory is going to be moved to its New Home in next 24 hours. Thanks Fastian
It's good that you have decided to move to a new host also check how many SQL queries the new host provides for you per hour also I advise webmasters to strongly check the reviews before moving to a new host!
I dont use HostingZoom, but impressed with your post to inform others after your initial recommendation, rep added
nice from you to do this. Also, a way to consume less resources would be to clean the hits table from time to time. But the best would be to be created a mod that would only clear the hits of categories.
Both Hosting Zoom and Reseller Zoom are good only for low traffic simple sites. I used resellerzoom.com for a few months and got really fed up. Just before I quit, I was getting database errors at least 100 times a day. . It is difficult to find a host worse than resellerzoom.com
Thanks for the information Fastian, i had them as a potential future company in mind that i would use but will steer clear now. Please keep us updated of who you move to and any good recommendations, i will probably take an additional small hosting account in the near future. Will be glad to hear any companies your happy with. I know no hosting company can be perfect but some are really terrible, sorry to hear of your problems Fastian.
Does anyone use mjzhosting.net ? The vguy running it appears to go out of his way to make sure everyone knowshe runs a cheap and nasty service. Has anyone put it to the test?
that's why i'm moving my directories to my new DEDICATED SERVERS sure its alot of hard work uprooting all my sites to this new server, but its gonna be worth all the effort with the amount of control and access speed I will be getting. Just hope that I can do it while keeping the downtime to a minimum
I have got similar problem, but after do some optimization, everything works smoothly now. I think you could do the same to optimize your directory script.
Thanks for the post, its always good to keep on top of what's hot and what's not. I'm lucky like jl255 I got a couple of servers I own which I'm having co-located in next few weeks, cost me a bundle but it should be worth it.
oo btw: they don't work well with copyright infringment either. I tried calling about 3 times ... and their staff keep giving me wrong timing. Anytime i call, they just say our abuse department is off !! Email them, it doesn't work no reply its been 15 days.
Best way being google 'company-name sucks', that brings up all the threads relating to that host, ... especially threads like this one! M.
Thanks for this info. I once thought of switching to resellerzoom.com also. I'm always willing to find a better host. So this kind of thread is always helpful to hear what other DP members experienced in their hosts. In fact, I have just moved to another one few days ago, and I will let you guys know how things are
I have seen a similar posting for “Zoom†in another forum. If you read the TOS at HostingZoom- "8. Resource Usage. You agree to not use excessive amounts of resources. Any violations may result in us taking corrective action in order maintain server stability by killing any processes, disabling and/or suspending your account. 8.1 Shared hosting accounts may not use more than 3% CPU or 3% memory over a 24 hour period, run more than 15 simultaneous processes or allow any process to run for longer than 30 CPU seconds. Databases are limited to 24 max user connections. Semi dedicated hosting accounts may not use more than 6% CPU daily, run more than 30 simultaneous processes or allow any process to run for longer than 60 CPU seconds. Databases are limited to 30 max user connections." Always read the TOS. Painful to do so, but can avoid a headache. If not sure, ask specifically about your particular needs. This clause is not that unusual in the industry. Some are more strict about it than others. Particularly as the server gets loaded up with customers.
I have been with a few hosts and a vps seems far more reliable than your standard shared hosting. I 100% recommend www.zone.net great support and lots of dedicated resources plus nightly backups and great support.
