So how naive were you when you first decided to start your own website? What mistakes did you do? Any funny stories? 9 or so years ago i could not turn a computer off. So i used to unplug it... As the time went past i was getting the hang of things. This is when i decided to start my own forum. After following a link at the footer of another website i ended up on phpbb. "Oh, so you can have a free forum!" I thought. I downloaded a zip file... Excellent! What now? So after bugging some people on phpbb forum i realised that i need to upload it. This is when i realised that my ISP gave me 50MB file hosting space... woot! After bugging some more people i have managed to upload my zip. When i went to that url my forum was not there! Just a zip file... It was time to write to phpbb to tell them that their program does not work... A few days after more emails and support tickets i was told to unzip it first. When all the files were uploaded i went to install.php and saw a great big text file with some code. Hmmmm... phpbb software is really crap! Some more threads were started with more questions... It turned out i needed a php interpreter! WTF!!?? So i asked them if i could go without it... After getting some hosting that supports PHP i ended up on install page for the second time in my life. I filled in all the details but i was soon stuck on the field that asked me for database details... DATABASE???!!!! I was sure it would work just fine if i hit install... A few 1000 support tickets/posts/threads/emails later, after being called all sorts of names by senior members i had my forum up and running. It was time to customise it. After opening a tpl file with MS paint... Not supported format???!!! What kind of crap software is paint? Does not even open tpl files. I was now banned from many forums but i did have a working forum with a "nice" looking template... It was now time to wait for the visitors... To my surprise after waiting for a week or so no one came Come on! Its internet! I should have millions of members by now! Then i spent the next year or so getting into SEO, submitting individual pages into google, posting on guestbooks asking people to join, optimising my keyword by creating pages of meta tags and text saying: "forum, forum, forum, forum, forum, forum..." The more keywords the better... 7 or so years later I'm here now telling noobs that PR is just an indicator, a result of link development. That Govs and Edus are treated the same. That they can minimize the server load by getting read of unwanted queries and that their Adsense layout is not only against the TOS it also sucks! Can anyone help me with AJAX?
I started in June 1996. My first SEO attempt was before I even knew what it was or had hurd of da doorway page, back in the nostalgia days when it took just a day to be indexed in search engines and two weeks for a free Yahoo listing. I made a ton of spammy keyword infested pages linking to da index page. The search engines loved them, and even a few directories linked to them, including Infoseek!! Instead of making web sites covering every single topic, to get ready for the year 2000 internet gold rush, I made just one web site. By 2000 I had only two Nintendo sites striking the rich!!! Those two sites, from the banner/text link/search engine craze, made almost $100,000 in 2000!!! Then NASDAQ crashed in early 2001!! Another boo-boo...It took me until da year 2000 to figure out there was more than one way to make money. In 1997 I discovered the banners but I didn't even think to use Altavista, Infoseek or Yahoo to find webmaster how to make money forums!! Not until 2000 did I discover geek/talk!!!!! Combine da next two boo-boos... Another boo-boo...It wasn't until November 2002 that I discovered the Amazon Products Feed. Another boo-boo...It wasn't until about 2004 that I learned mod_rewrite. Now, with the last two, if I had learned mod_rewrite before 5/22/02 and found the APF script that day, I would have had a few years to make 500 web sites using the script and then milking Google for nice cash...and instead of releasing the mod_rewrite hack...I should of just shut up about it instead of generating a ton of competition. In 2005, it only took about 10 sites to make $7,500 during the holiday quarter. I can just think of what 500 of those sites back in Q3 of 2002 would of done, with even less competition, and a much more stupid Google, when it comes to duplicate content!
I started when i was 13. I thought to myself "OMFG SCREW BILL GATES I GOTTA MAKE COMPETITION". So i went to lifelesspeople.com and got free hosting. I created a pathetic site called "clickbully.x67.net" (subdomain). It was the worst site i have ever made. Rob
I made a laptops site and paid a company $275 a fortnight to get recip links. After a few months I ended up doing it all myself. Once I learned SEO, that got the ball rolling for me to start making some money. Col
