I think in the modern race of directories, these things are getting essential, it certainly helps to show how professional and keen you are for your directory/site.

i have heard somewhere on seo talk that web crawler is like your litter nephew; so if you follow xhtml & css guidelines crawler will probably go through a code logic that is consider as a normal test case; so the website that follow xhtml & css guidelines should get crawler faster in first attempt; so i would think if your website have 100000+ page you may get them crawled in relative short period.

i don't think it give you any competitive advantage that i have noticed!!! or higher page rank.

I think unique content and appropriate page title is still the king!!!

    It's all true.
Just forgot to mention promotion power (cash)
Without it you won't suceed even with most unique content, titles, etc.

You wrote about robots crawling... That's also true.
Now we should know, xhtml valid website will be easily and properly accessed by visitors under most of internet browsers. FF and IE are not alone. :)

And I feel good when people can see I'm enough experienced to build valid website.
This is also a matter of trust and believing the rest of my services are the same.

Do you want business from Mac users? If your answer is "Yes," then you had better validate both your markup and CSS. I've come across several directories on which the "Submit" button didn't work on Safari for Mac!

Damn, adnan beat me to it :D I was just about to say I don't think search engines are that bothered about it, I think it is more of an accolade and proof that you are serious about your projects.

Hey, can u check out how my Linkspub looks on a mac.

LOL U know I had a feeling somebody was gonna post something like that.

I think Microsoft mentions something about well formed markup in their search engine guidelines somewhere, but a few errors here & there I guess can slip by.

Just lately i was working to try and get my directory http://www.allskytv.com XHTML Validated. I managed to get it down to 14 errors. Am a little stuck there not sure how to fix the remaining ones. To start with a lot of the errors where caused by mods installed from linksforever (sponsored ads and news feeds).
