I understand you, but that would not be necessary in a way. Most sex offences take place inside the houses, in the family, often with alcohol in the picture. I think the need of have such a web site reflects the humans negative nature of curiosity and wanting to grasp in others private life. The same need that creates paparazzi photographs. I dont think this site will prevent sex offenses in the future from the ones named or others. That someone will keep their eye on this people, how can that prevent more crimes?
not all of these people went to jail, some may have only got probation. do you think that means they got their punishment? sex offenders have a higher than normal rate of recidivism (the chance they will commit another crime). According to the Office of Justice Programs of the United States Department of Justice:[4] * Of the 272,111 persons released from prisons in 15 states in 1994, an estimated 67.5% were rearrested for a felony or serious misdemeanor within 3 years, 46.9% were reconvicted, and 25.4% resentenced to prison for a new crime. * The 272,111 offenders discharged in 1994 accounted for nearly 4,877,000 arrest charges over their recorded careers. * Sex offenders were about four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after their discharge from prison –– 5.3 percent of sex offenders versus 1.3 percent of non-sex offenders.
Finally! someone with facts??? who knew I was wondering about the recidivism rate...it's not like theft, assault, or anything like that... they're wired wrong IMO
exactly! they aren't doing this for money, or revenge, or whatever other motives are for most crime. They do this because inside them is a desire. Jail doesn't make their desire go away.
I think it's got some biological basis.. maybe a hormone or vitamin deficiency. I was just reading an article (for example) on how a certain hormone affects our perceptions of others as separate, "thinking" individuals as it relates to disorders along the autism spectrum. The body is a machine after all..
As long as this is what the society says is right, its right. This is democracy. We have to respect the democracy, even if it seems very very wrong in some cases. The society give him probation: (... returned to the community for a period in which they will have to abide to certain conditions set forth by the Court under the supervision of a probation officer. General conditions may include maintaining employment, abiding to a curfew, living where directed, abstaining from unlawful behavior, following the probation officer's orders...) If the majority of the people really wanted more punishment they would see to it that it happened. Neither do this web site. And most sex crimes are made under the influences of drugs and alcohol. specially alcohol. There you go. I dont think its worth to ruin the lives of 94.7 of the released sex convicted just to warn about the 5.3. The site will not help to stop that 5.3 anyway. If you think so, please tell me how the site can stop them. I know that I appear to be very cynical here, but I am just defending the democracy actually. And that boils down to: Let the people elect the ones that decide who is the court/judges. Then let the courts decide the punishments.
But then again, who made that system possible ? Yes, elected people. And who can change that system ? Again, elected people. Unless we believe in Illuminati we have to know that the democracy formed the western world like it is now, with all its imperfectness (just like us people).
People are less likely to commit a crime if they feel as though people are watching them. Just as an example, if you walk into a gas station and lets role-play as though you are theif. You believe at least 1 or 2 people know that you are a theif, do you think that would at least deter you from stealing? I think it probably would because you know you are much more likely to be caught. People typically only commit crimes if they believe they can get away with it. It is hard to get away with something if you have people watching you. The list may not directly stop people from committing crimes, but it does so indirectly.
Sorry. I will stop it now But I feel that we have been talking about the sex offender site and its role in society all the time. I mean, the site is serious and it may or may not conflict with basic human right, all depends on what stand you take.
If this sentence is read the way it is written, then they are saying that non-sex offenders are 1/4 as likely to be arrested for a sex crime after they get out of jail than if they had originally been arrested for a sex crime. That would make sense as most criminals that re-offend do so in the area they were originally in. They may step up - say from petty burglary to grand theft or assault to murder, but they don't generally jump genres. (Also, how is some one who was arrested for a non-sex offense get arrested for another sex crime? Another suggests there was one in the first place.) So, either this sentence is basically a scare tactic with no meaning, or it is just poorly worded. I am willing to accept that it is just poorly worded. Even so, how are these numbers generated? One of the problems with these lists are that the offenses are not clear. Taking a piss in a bush in the park or hiring a prostitute is enough to get you on the list. Why would you be worried about those people? Now, obviously if the offense uses the terms forcibly then that is a person to be wary of. This is true for your average person, but not the case with the people that you are worried about on this list. People that have spent a long time in jail can (and do) get institutionalized. Living in prison is easier than dealing with the stress of living on the outside where everybody is watching (actually or perceived) and expecting you to fail. This can be even more true for sex offenders as they feel persecuted on the outside (not making a judgement on this just pointing it out). If they are the type of person that has "bad wiring" then they are likely to reoffend whether you watch them or not.
there is one in the 2 buildings away in my condos and I have a 2 year old daughter =\ . I will say though that as a parent I am glad that this type of resource is available. although as a person I feel that it doesnt provide enough facts. I am sure that many many of the people you will find are guilty of the crimes. however what if a man/woman is listed for say being 18 and getting caught sleeping with a 16/15yr old? they could eventually have married that person yet still be classified as a sex offender. and that is wrong.
As a parent you can also just assume that you have a sex offender in the neighborhood anyway, cause everybody have that. Your second point is very good, the site is just black and white, no grey scales.
Sex offenders and cops never fair well in prison.. I have a good friend from college who's dad is in prison for raping her as a child.. He's been there a long time and will never get out.. They keep him isolated... Even the worst of criminals do not tolerate people who hurt children... BTW, how come never land did not show up in that sex offender search?
