Looks like an interesting place to visit. But if you live in the U.S. how did you go there? Are you not opening yourself up to problems if caught?

One of the best country, I ever liked.

If you have dual citizenship (not just US) you can go there.

Looks very interesting these 3rd World places have a lot to offer, but without all the frills of the rest of the world
Imagine a dream place for an architect to visit as many splendid old buildings
Will be spectacular if it ever gets a makeover and development

One of the best places I've ever visited.

I was working in Cancun Mexico during the Spring Break (whoooo Spring Break!) and after that I had a few weeks to spare and plenty of cash so I went to Havana.

The plane was a bit ropey  on Cubana Airways but it got me there lol.

Anyway, had a few problems at the airport, they were trying to extort a bit of cash out of me but I wasn't having any of that. Basically they try and stitch you up at the airport if you have no accommodation and try and sell you accommodation for a week, it's all a load of bollocks, I managed to pay for one night in one of the hotels but didn't pay for the week that they were trying for, after one night in a hotel I stayed in a Casa Particular, which is basically where you rent a room in a Cubans house (and yes, I got the best room, the owners bedroom!)

Also the guy at passport control was saying that my passport was damaged because the laminated part on it was slightly damaged. This prick was pulling it apart even more so the laminate was away from the backing and told me that it's a $50 fine, I told him to f*ck off as it was clear exactly what the idiot was doing.

So the hotel I had was nice, right in the middle of Havana, a pool bar on the 10th floor, it was great. The look from my hotel room was unreal, looking down on downtown Havana is a sight to behold, nearly all the houses look like they are about to collapse and they all drive around in them shitty American cars from the 50's and 60's. A bit like cars in the film back to the future lol!

But anyway, instead of doing the usual touristy crap I integrated with the locals. The locals are not allowed to be seen talking with tourists so I had to follow my new found buddy from a distance.

Anyway he took me to his house one night to meet his girlfriend, the house looked like it was about to collapse at any given time (like every house there does) and he introduced me to his girlfriend, they were both so friendly but seriously all they had was a mattress, a few other bits and bobs and a big black and white TV and the tube was on it's way out so all you could see was about two thirds of the picture.

But the thing was that they were happy! Not worrying about the kind of shit that Americans and Europeans worry about but genuinely happy and friendly people. It blew me away. He took me down a load of dodgy looking streets to a guys house where there was a full size American pool table!

Of course to us that is nothing but in Havana this was the highlight of the night for the Cubans, I met many more nice people and had a great night. The dude even sorted me out with a top notch whore later in the week for less than 20 bucks. :D

I would say than other than when I arrived in Delhi in the middle of the night Havana was the 2nd place to blow my mind. The place is unreal.

Travelling is a buzz and opens your mind to a lot of things, Cuba is recommended, along with India and South Africa. :)

My buddy I was working with in Cancun was American and he said he managed to get in Cuba OK, had the same shit on entry as I did but flying in from Mexico he had no probs so I would recommend it DG. The best bonus of all is that you can get Havanna Club (similar in quality to Ron Bacardi) from these little liquor huts for around 3 or 4 bucks! Woooooters!

I'd love to visit Moscow, Dubai, Tokyo, and Delhi... if I had the ways and means. Interesting story you've told.. nice to see it from that perspective. Too often we only see things as filtered thru our own values and culture.

Of course I did buddy. :)

Of course everyone wants to be your friend and every girl is hitting on you all the time (I even had them hitting me in this cafe I used to have my breakfast in in the morning ) but ignoring the gimps and pimps and meeting a genuine family there was one of the highlights of my trip.

Everyone wanted to sell me cigars too LMFAO!
