NY Times reports Gonzales has resigned as AG http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/27/w...1188216560-5kcE4otZQuRaW4gG2t63jg&oref=slogin
Great start to Monday really good news http://edition.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/27/gonzales/index.html
Yup. It was only a matter of time. The GOP used to claim they were the party with "morals"; yet they're doing a whole lot of resigning lately...
First of all, how about gross incompetence? In one testimony alone he used the phrase "I don't remember" 122 times! (verify) In today's world of communication, you can't tell me that absolutely no person (himself, friends, secretary, subordinates) had written on a calendar what Alberto Gonzales was going to do that day...
Hey! I just thought of something! Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart announced, on friday night, that they were going on vacation... Then, first thing this morning, Gonzo resigns... Was Gonzo waiting for a time when Jon/Stephen wouldn't be able to embarrass the living daylights out of him? Haha, I just found that interesting...
I wonder if Alberto set a Ripley's believe it or not world record for accusations for perjuring himself in front of Congress? I'm curious what tipped the boat to get him to resign? Meanwhile here is an OP ED piece from a former career Justice Department Lawyer. This guy says the character of the Justice Department under this administration was remarkably different from that of all other administrations in which he had served. It appears that the Bush administration had a markedly different concept of justice than that of 30 years of Republican and Democratic administrations before them. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-rich29mar29,1,5443285.story?ctrack=1&cset=true Bye bye Alberto
No one has yet to say what he did that was illegal or wrong? Why are all the libs on nothing more than a fishing expedition?
"I don't remember" "I don't remember" "I don't remember" Get the point? It's not illegal to be forgetful, but it is grossly negligent for the Attorney General to be that evasive and/or obtuse while offering testimony.
You don't think a person like that should be removed for incompetence? (both GOP/DEM agree he should have resigned) Then how about the attorney firings? How about those "lost" emails? I think he lost the respect of the American people with all those "I don't remember" statements... After that he should have no longer been allowed to hold that position...
so who's job is it to replace US attorney's whose contract is up? It is a contractual position, not a permanent one...I remember that the Clinton admin replaced all of them, not just 8...how come what they did was not illegal, as ya'll have said this is? Why didn't that bring the uproar? Maybe because the GOP knew that it was perfectly legal, and maybe because the dems are on a fishing expedition? If it was illegal, why has gonzalez not been charged with anything?
d16man, I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the criticisms before trying to attack or diminish them. Many incoming administrations have turned over attorneys, for the most part, this action occurs at the beginning of new executive regimes. These firings were conducted mid-term, in a large # with speculation that the firings were politically motivated. Of course, when asked to provide the correspondence that lead to the firings, Gonzales "lost the emails" and "couldn't remember". It's politicizing the legal system this way, with the executive controlling who administers law, and more specifically in this case, how they administer the law that undermines the entire system. I believe I recall an interview with the fired Attorney from New Mexico, and his statement that he was being pressured to commence prosecuting a case that he did not have enough evidence (in his opinion) to bring to the court. If those emails came to light, and Alberto Gonzales had testified in good faith, then this would be a legitimate cause for concern. It's not that what happened isn't wrong, it's that the incorrectness of the situation is compounded by the secrecy. You can bet that Gonzales would have been more transparent, and those emails printed and dropped from helicopters if they weren't a smoking gun.
Good riddance. The man had a moral problem and seemed to not be concerned about making good laws or making sure that justice was followed. Instead he seemed to be a crony for the Bush administration. The attorney general should be above partisanship.
Some of the potential crimes: Perjury, violations of the Hatch Act, tampering with testimony of a witness Its hard to get evidence and ultimately snag him when the white house put millions of e-mails on the Republican National Committee email system rather than the White House email system, as they are supposed to do, and when the White House has put complete restriction on providing any documents to Congress claiming executive privelege.
so what you are saying is that even though what he did was perfectly legal and within the scope of his job, he should have still stepped down? If the attorney's were not doing their jobs, I would have fired them as well. Do you think the Clinton Admin firing ALL of the attorney's was politically motivated? Do you think that since Bush and the senate Appointed and confirmed these 8 attorneys that that was politically motivated?? I think that people hate the Bush admin so much that they will do anything they can to try and criticize it, even when what Gonzalez did was perfectly legal and appropriate. As I have said before, the dem led congress is on a fishing expedition. Why don't they do something good and approve some money for the troops, or cut all the pork, or quit playing footsies with other men in bathrooms??
