Build your own youtube site in 5 minutes!

For the last six months I have been working on a personal project during my free time. I wanted a video bookmarking system that was simple to use, provide organization controls (sort, edit, categorize, move, etc) and could also be used as a video gallery to present my videos to a larger audience.

So after hundreds of hours of coding I created myVidster.

What makes myVidster special?
Provides a bookmarklet to add video clips from any video host, site or blog.
FLV download from the bookmarklet and gallery
Full support for Flash/Quicktime/Windows Media/DivX
Dynamic thumbnail creation for any video site (you can select from 3 thumbnails).
Presentation layer using a gallery/channel interface.
Provides relations with other users (show you other users who are collecting the same videos)
mySpace style urls (www.myvidster.com/marques)
Full text search engine (the real thing!!!) for your personal collection and for the myVidster network.

TODO:
I am still working on the subscription function to allow users to subscribe to channels and galleries and I will be merging search results very soon.

myVidster is open to the public, right now I have been very busy with my day job (it pays my bills) and have not been marketing it, but when I free up some time I will start making some noise

What I originally thought though was you provided an open source youtube script, where people could have their own youtube style site.

 

Noddegamra, your right, the title is a little mis leading. Does anyone have any suggestion on a better post title? I could say 'new video bookmarking system', but that sounds sooo boring .

 

I tried to change the title to 'Build your own video gallery in 5 minutes', but dp does not allow me to change the post title.

download as in the source code? This is a closed source project.

Now if you want to download the flash video all you need to click the download link under the bookmarked video. Or click the download button when you are using the bookmark.

Thanks B4nks for the positive feedback, my goal is to make a bookmarking system that will reduce the work of managing and sharing video. Other video bookmarking services creates more work then what they are worth (I will not drop any names).

bradysbar03, I am thinking about writing up a business plan so that I can get some VC money. I would love to quit my day job, build a team and do what I love to do!!!

UPDATE (for those who care)
Added some color, login/register box, tag cloud and active galleries on the homepage.
Tag clouds for gallery and channels
Users can now see tags base on Gallery, Channel or the entire network.

Great what you've done to date, may I suggest a space within the template for banner ads or google ads...

I dont use google but a lot do.

Yes I am looking for beta testers! As for selling the script I may or may not sell. For now I am looking for some venture capitalist who might be interested in the project. If I can get enough VC money then i can quit my day job .

Also I am looking into a way for other web masters to embed their gallery into their own website (possible iFrame solution). This solution is more practical b/c myvidster does things like take screen shots of video, which requires advance knowledge of apache servers.

I have decided to use this post to document my progress with myVidster (this will end when I install a blog on the site). Also I will at least get a comment or two on DP which makes me smile (and give green rep).

Updates (for those who care)
#1 I have completed the subscription logic! User can subscribe to galleries and channels. User's subscription are viewable by the public.

For example:
http://www.myvidster.com/subscriptions/Marques

#2 myVidster know allows adult content (b/c the internet is for porn, right???)
I have coded rules to keep the site viewable by minors and for the office. Guest visiting the site will have the adult filter turn on. The only way to turn the filter off is to create an account and turning the filter off in the user options (just click the adult filter link in the top right corner). After the filter is turn off just use the search box and type in naughty words. Enjoy.
