The keywords in your account are nearing an unmanageable size

Just wanted to share this message from an AdWords account.

I wish AdWords would provide a quota/quota used status in each AdWords account. Let me know how much room I have to play with:)

LOL, the account in question is almost 100% poor performing (poor performing to G' = $0.01 CPC) keywords:D

"The keywords in your account are nearing an unmanageable size"

Shouldn't that be "The number of keywords in your account are nearing an unmanageable size"?

How does a keyword get to an "unmanageable size"? Big fonts maybe?:D

I think you should point out the faults in their statement by re-directing them to the google URLs that explain what keywords are etc..... ;->

So these keywords are 'poor' and still $0.01?

As a rule, I delete any keywords that have had absolutely no impressions over the last 30 days.

My reasoning is two-fold. Firstly, if they get less than one impression per month, they'll get less than one click per year. So I'll be old and grey before I ever see a conversion from it, so it's not worth worrying about it.

Secondly, whilst it's true that adding thousands of these terms together may make it worthwhile, there's no way to winnow out the terms that aren't profitable, so the performance of the 'masses' of keywords that are almost never searched for is likely to be only marginally profitable, and not worth the effort.

If a keyword gets even a single search, I'll keep it (unless it is clearly unprofitable). But un-optimisable keywords without any traffic just make everything take longer.

I'm a big fan of the long-tail, and many of my campaigns have 10,000+ keywords initially, but within a few months, I rarely have more than about 1,000 (usually less than 500).
