Many decades ago now, a professor of mine at Berkeley (an expert on the Middle East, now on a visiting professorship, American University, Beirut), was in Egypt. He was with his wife, an Egyptian woman, in their home.

The "Moral Police" dragged him out and beat him to within an inch of his life for being in the home of a Muslim woman. It took her screams, and for them to finally believe it, that he was, in fact, her husband, and for them to cease their beating.

Fact. Not pretty, not biased, just a fact. For me, it speaks more to the problem of conflating theology for jurisprudence, forming a theocracy, than anything else. Such a theocracy exists in Iran.

I didn't notice this post yesterday...

Why should we all take a stand against this before knowing all the facts... The journalist wasn't even sure of the reason the guy was getting whipped; for all we know, he could have murdered 17 nuns and 2 donkeys... Then he'd be getting off easy...

Taking a stand against something that happened in an article, when even the journalist admits to not knowing the facts, seems a little premature...

There is no "moral police" in egypt. Egypt has been under one anti-Islamic secularist dictator after another since 1952.

I may have gotten the country wrong - apologies for the mistake, if so. I am going back nearly 25 years ago, now. I recall he said it was a para-police group by the name of "society for the prevention of vice" or some such name. I didn't recall that he said it was Saudi Arabia, but I may be mistaken.

Egypt is far from secularist, by the way. Though Nasser instituted a kind of "arab nationalism" along socialist principles, it is well established that religious minorities (particularly, Coptic Christians and Ba'hai) have a tough time of things in Egyptian life, publically and privately.

Well, he shouldn't have broken the law. Every country has laws, and if you wish to be a citizen of that country, you should follow them. If he didn't want to, he should have just moved someplace else.......

I don't like these types of laws in Iran, so I'm glad I live in the U.S. But if I had to go to Iran, I would make sure I don't break any laws, because this type of punishment is both painful and humiliating at the same time.

This is a method of punishment and has nothing to do with religion. Is sending a young offender to prison to be raped or killing the prisoners by electric chair or lethal injection less inhumane than punishment by lashing?

Sexual offenders are on the loose in North America. Child abuse is on the rise in North America. If we had these laws here, there wouldn't be this kind of rise. The judicial system in North America is very weak or at least in Canada it is. All these rapists are just walking around looking for their next kid to rape (God forbid) -- it's sad when you have youth like you ly2, wasting their intelligence by observing what goes on in Iran. Try to fix your society's problems, then you can go to Iran and fix up theirs. For now, Iran and Saudi societies are far better off (judicial matters) than NA/UK. They remove the filth from the root rather than offering rehab centers. That's why the crime rate is lower than USA.

    wow wow wow....just wow.

Maybe, one day in the future, we(pigs and infidels) can all be great like Iran. That's the day we are all REALLY looking forward to and hoping for.

Do I really need a sarcasm tag here?

I wasn't addressing you. Are you now admitting you are ant-American? I love a good game of chess, but I didn't expect you would just toss your queen out there like that ;)

What are the facts? Sex and alcohol. In other words, like virtually any single man does on the weekend, he goes off to get drunk and get laid. Except the punishment for it is 80 lashes.

Yet you aren't even willing to say "whoa...hold on, this is wrong?" I guess my point was correct after all. Too afraid saying the obvious might portray you as a Bush supporter

    Four year patriotism strikes again.

Reading the comments from the link really interesting. See how the west culture think about his kind of punishment.
    This one is my favorite.

    Even for female.
