I'm listed for free on a PR3 DMOZ page.
The page I would be on if I were listed in Yahoo! is a PR2, for which they would want $299.

Doing the math, I'm grateful for the DMOZ link. BTW, a DMOZ link is a plus factor in some formulas computing the recent concept of "Page Strength" — for example, the formula at http://www.seomoz.org/page-strength/.

Dmoz listings are almost certainly a factor in ranking, just like being on a domain thats 10 yeares old helps. PR isn't really important its how Google view the site. They really seem to like teenagers..

Hell Jim, I spent two years tryng to get two of my sites into DMOZ, at the time the PR of those pages was PR7. Finally, earlier this year, my sites got accepted but now the DMOZ pages are less PR value than some spammer's blog... Personally, I got really pissed when Looksmart dropped Zeal directory. I spent hours of my life editing and approving links in Zeal... My attitude now is screw "user edited" or "hand edited" directories...

Listing in dmoz is free, and they accept you site quickly if it's worth it in the specific category.

I have tried to find the name of the editor at bottom of the pages and I can't find any name.

That's because there isn't a specific editor and it will be one of the editall's or higher that will swing by and do the category. Chance will be a fine thing. Submit and forget about it. The story about contacting an editor to me seems a tall one. ;) It actually is a good way to get your site banned I thought.

5k to get listed is so expensive...the editor doesn't even know the price to be listed on a directory

Dude, that's just hearsay. It didn't happen to you - you only read about it on someone else's blog. Be sure to research this a little more before jumping to conclusions.

That's what I am seeing. There are no editors so getting into the dmoz is difficult for new sites.

I don't know but since I posted that link we've gotten an influx of traffic from DMOZ and I know we're not listed in thier directory. :)
