I would also rather be in Yahoo because any directory that has human editors that sometimes can be corrupt can lose its trust in Google and webmasters alike.

Wow, now that's messed up. Can't shoemoney get re-listed though?

Why would Jeremy want to? He's already branded and obviously doesn't rely on them for traffic...He gets type in traffic not search engine traffic. Although if he cares a lick about page rank his DMOZ listing might bring his page rank down..but I doubt it.

Actually Shoemoney has in effect done a Link-bait. The story may be true but I would have found it much more interesting had he reported the extortion to DMOZ and seen what the reaction was. The story would have been more complete. However, "Shoemoney gets extorted by a DMOZ editor and has his site removed when he doesn't pay" is a better tabloid (Digg) type link-bait.

Good marketing on his part as he doesn't really need the DMOZ listing anyway. The bad part is that all other DMOZ editors will be seen as corrupt by association and there is nothing from his end in reporting the alleged corrupt editor so that other webmasters such as yourself may not get targetted.

DMOZ is NOTHING special. The only people that don't seem to know is are webmasters

    BINGO!

DMOZ is just a maybe authority website with a high pagerank, same as MANY other websites, Yahoo Directory included.

With $5000, it'd be easier to buy a yahoo link and 240 PR 4 links at $20 each.

But you said a PR 4 on both would be the same and I said authority so authority has nothing to do with it...Wrong authority has everything to do with it and a pr4 on both is not the same.

Actually that may not be entirely true. I have one site in DMOZ right now. That site has about 5 pages of content. I am number one on all Search engines for that particular niche and keywords.

The competition site that is number 2 has a few thousand pages and a higher Alexa rank. The only difference between our sites is that I am listed in DMOZ and the other site is not. An obvious conclusion would be that the DMOZ listing is keeping me above that site.

Now I am not agreeing or disagreeing but how are you to come to this conclusion that the only reason that you are above them is because of DMOZ? Your on and off page optimization could be better.

It's because my website is basically dead (for the time being). It was created 6 years ago and has not been updated much, though still contains some relevant information. The other site has an entire community going right now with thousands of forum posts and pictures etc. Their Alexa rank is ridiculously higher than mine. Even I acknowledge that their site is better. They are using keywords same/similar to mine and are Number 2 in all search engines to me. Personally I cannot fathom why I outrank them as the pages I have were created with no SEO in mind. DMOZ listing is the only difference I see currently.

yes they are corrupt .. I have a website (not on sig) that are 100%
better info that the ones they have on a certain cat i wanted to get into but haven't been accepted for like 4 years. but my competitor has all his clients on that city, I mean all of them (real estate catagory)

    coincidence? or something fishy?

just surf around and you'll find out that it's a Dmoz scam, human edited that
you know if you need to get in, you need either to pay or know someone who knows someone but still have to pay ..or just simply need to kneel down and do your job ..not my style!

BTW i have better rankings than those other sites
that were listed on dmoz, so i would spend my time seo'ing site instead of worrying about dhell

    Not really :)

It is a good enough niche to monetise on and right now I would not risk the niche (oddly enough only 2 -3 sites are targetting it right now) or its listing in DMOZ.

For many verticals all the DMOZ pages have no editors.

I just found a category that kind of fits and have submitted.

How do I pay the editor when they contact me? Do they take paypal?

It seems like they are in decay. Google still gives them juice. Probably because AOL owns DMOZ. (Netscape is owned by AOL)

Are you an editor by any chance?

If what you posted is true which I hardly doubt (the chance of it being true is 1 in 100) then you just got lucky.
