    Hi all,

I have finally ditched Microsoft windows on my main computer at home.

I am running Ubuntu Linux for quite some time. I run the following programs that meet most of my website maintaining needs:

    1. GIMP - for web graphics
    2. Kompozer - web editor
    3. Blue Fish - web editor
    4. Firefox - with Google toolbar, delicious tags and other social bookmarking tags.
    5. GFTP - for transferring files to the webhost
    6. Open Office - for word processing

    so far so good :)

Cool. Ditching Microsoft sounds appealing. I hope that it works well for you over the long run. I may do the same at some point.

Good idea, hope you will get fewer infections.

Not sure if there are people writing virus programs for linux as of now.

i ditched Microsoft on my main PC about a year ago and switched to OS X (i.e. iMac) .. it's Unix based and thus far is not prone to any of the 1,000,000,000 virii and spyware that's out there..
it's nice to just USE the computer and not have to fuss with antivirus, antispyware, anti-trojan's, etc...
I kinda feel bad for all you Windows users..

I run Mepis and it runs really well. GiMP is a great image editing tool (or at least the best for free for Linux).

I was just over at linuxboards.org and they were discussing that (image editors) over there.

What I'd really like to see is a really good web editor for Linux. It's the best platform to RUN on but not the best to DEVELOP on... little of an oxymoron there?

In canada a 'gimp' means a 'fool'

also, 'to gimp' something is to detract from it.

Great choice of a Linux OS. :D
The only thing you really have to worry about is compatibility issues...so many application and game developers make games for Windows-only!

    ...so definitely get WINE.

Honestly two applications are keeping me from switching. I MAY switch if newsleecher and WoW ever come to Linux. A far superior OS and I love it, just need to dual boot and that I hate

Ugh! I hated Linux, but maybe that is because I was raised on Windows. My mom switched to Linux and LOVES it. Eh, I guess it is all a matter of opinion. :)

Good choice. I prefer FireFTP to desktop Linux FTP clients, though.

Linux...I just never liked Linux. Windows is a lot more better, plus more features, and better security. I mean, why would you switch to LINUX?
