The best has got to be SubmitExpress, because
it would stand to reason that if you do a search
for "search engine optimization" the one that is
first is the BEST. and they are the first of all
companies targetting that field. How can one
trust a company that can't even do it for their
own industry to do it for you?!

An SEO company that ranks #1 might not get you to that position if you are in a very competitive industry, unless you have an unlimited budget. If your customers are local or regional, your keyphrases might contain the name of your city or region, which will make it easier for a half-decent SEO to help you and there are dozens of them. Go with one who sounds like they know their stuff and are easy to get on with. High price might not equate to competence.

Be careful in choosing your "SEO expert", SEO consultant is much safer. Most SEO experts are not "experts", so be warned. I know a lot about SEO, but I never use that term - SEO is a constantly changing science, and anyone calling themselves an expert should consider being more modest. But you can get genuine help.

I'm going to have to toss my hat into the ring as well. However bear in mind that my specialty is Web development, not search engine MARKETING (which is what 2/3s of "SEO" really is).

What exactly are you looking for, and how far along are you? Do you need a Web site (or already have one), do you just need to have the content updated and optimized if you already have a site, or do you need someone to promote your site for you (again, presuming you already have one)?

If you need a Web site built, find a Web developer (yes, I said developer, not designer) who specializes in accessible and easy to use semantic Web site design/development who has access to talented graphic designers (so your site looks unique) and a good Web copywriter (if they don't have any or enough experience with actual design work or Web copywriting). Ideallly, your developer would know how to properly use clean, minimal, semantic and valid (X)HTML and CSS (and possibly JavaScript, where warranted) with the structure, appearance and functionality (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) separated into separate files, is able to design a site well (or have someone handle the graphic design for them) and write Web copy that SELLS (ironically having a copy of "Web Copy That Sells" by Maria Veloso can help in this a lot - creative writing experience and education can help too) that's written in plain, conversational langauge (who wants to read a sales letter anyway).

This person would be responsible for not only the site's development but also keyword research and other on-site SEO tasks (all of which are the domain of Web copywriting and development anyway).

If you need a Web copywriter to take your text and optmize it to get the most out of your visitors' wallets (or checkbooks/credit cards and so forth) as well as search engines, then I suggest you speak with Linda Jenkinson [shyflower.com] and Robert Warren [rswarren.com] - both are copywriting veterans and one is a current SitePoint Mentor (that would be Linda).

As for off-site marketing, there's really not much I can say since I don't deal with marketing that much, other than word of mouth.

Exactly zdon i couldnt agree more, people have called me an SEO Expert and honestly i believe the only experts are the guys that define the algo sitting at Google.

Yes we are good, but no SEO Company knows every aspect of the algorithm.
