World's perception of the US as the superpower

Obviously the technology and weapons have changed, but how exactly did America free itself from the almighty British empire? Wasn't it through protracted insurgency? Did we not utilize guerilla tactics?

I must admit, it's a challenge taking on three people who are determined for defeat. I've learned a lot though. All I have to do is declare I hate GWB and no longer support the troops, except for a defeat on their behalf, and I can virtually get away with saying anything!
