I have a reseller account with hostgator.com. Today I need to modify one account because I want to change the domain name. After I logged in I coudn't found the option "modify and account" under account functions. I've checked with other 4 reseller accounts with those I have with different company and found all of them have this function. I have sent them email about this and they reply: Hello, We do not allow 'modify an account' for reseller accounts - it should not have been there previously. You will need to assign new packages. Robin H Level II Systems Administrator hostgator.com Do you guys think that this is a big problem for reseller as you cannot change domain name for your user and it will make a bad image for hostgator.com? From now I will not recommend people for hostgator hosting.
Well, this is one of the things I dont like about big hosting company. It comes to a point were they are not flexible, and rather then being customer oriented they are more own-company oriented. But I must admit, I have seen once were changing the domain on an account in cpanel, did screw the http.conf file, but nothing serious.
Ha. Yeah, they're a-holes about changing a primary domain name. I think they charged me $5 to do that actually. I don't think I am going to recommend them any more either. I just spent most of the day talking with 4 different support staff members who kept f-ing up my CSR request, then sent me the wrong CSR, so when I went to active my SSL certificate it was for the wrong domain. I was furious and almost canceled. Right when I was going to start migrating all my databases and files over to a different company I finally got a support person who knew what they were doing.
Cpanel used to allow root access amongst other features back in the day by having this option allowed. I will investigate if this is a safe feature to enable, and if it is we will make it standard. Please send me a pm with your domain and I will be happy to help you. jquindlen we use to do this for free until we had a few customers who began changing their domain name a few dozen times a month. (seriously) It sounds pretty easy, but you'd be amazed how many things can break in cpanel with such a simple change as this. If you factor in all the support costs we lose money by making this change even with charging $5. Please send me your ticket number as I'd like to review your ticket to see if anyone on our staff made a mistake with helping you.
I don't think it is a big problem to modify domain. It is just couple of step and automatically done by cpanel. Domain Modification mydomain.com -> mynewdomain.com Modifying /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf Modifying proftpd.conf Modifying valiases Adding dns entry Created DNS entry for mynewdomain.com Done Removing old dns entry mydomain.com -> deleted from servername. Not only charges $5USD to change primary domain...The real drawback is.. for example we have 20 sites hosted with them with an prime domain...If we want to change to prime domain...we have to take the backup of all domains..If we had huge files there in other 19 Addon domains, its not easy task to backup all...Hostgator Need to find good solution to change the Prime Domain..Buzzzzzzz to Hostgator team..Please offer Nice Way to change the primary domain in just a click away...
I hate to be the odd one out on this subject, and although I have had some similar experiences with HostGator support, it is just a person to person thing, where as luck of the draw as to whether you get someone involved in what they do and provide excellent support and are extremely helpful, or you get someone who maybe bs'ed their way in to the job just for the sake of having the job and couldn't care less about what they do while there, in other words, some of them WILL be helpful, and others are "ticket happy" and if it's going to take some EFFORT on their part, they tell you submit a ticket even when it is with their permissions to be of help, umm next phone call please...sometimes I think they are rated, or paid by how quickly they move on to the next customer and how many total calls a day they answered rather than the actual dedication to be of help. So what I do is, first and quite quickly, CHALLENGE their eagerness to have you submit a ticket, and then if that IS their only recourse, either hang up and call again to get someone different, or ASK FOR A SUPERVISOR, I have found that HostGator DOES care about keeping customers, even if it isn't representative of some of their help! Hope you have better experiences with their support from these suggestions! TSG!
I had similar concern when I tried to configure my account to host multiple sites. I thought I'll be stuck with that primary domain forever till I contacted the sales dept. Their response was quick and the domain has been changed. I wasn't charged the $5 though I think because I'm a new customer who paid for a full year My first experience with the customer service was great I hope it will stay like that forever
