Local vs Global Directories

Just wondering what you guys think about a local vs. a global directory? On the one hand the local directory (i.e. dedicated to one major city) drastically reduces the potential market, but on the other hand becomes so much more relevant for business listings. It seems to me (I have no experience in this area) it would be so much easier to gather advertisers that way. Not to mention that the competition for a local directory will be significantly smaller.

Has anyone tried a local directory? Would a city of say 5-10 million be able to generate enough traffic/link submissions/advertising to be worthwhile?

I think a local directory is great, especially if you intend to get out there and hustle up business in person and/or with local advertising. You could always have a 'World' category as well to attract some outside listings.

I run a regional directory, see my sig. Its a quite old and gets maximum traffic out of all my directories:).

Link submissions are less as compared to of generic directory. But managing a local/regional directory brings immense satisfaction.

Your directory definitely looks good. Have you tried approaching local businesses with advertising requests to replace your google ads?
