White Hat = Someone who is ignorant to seo. Truly innocent web site building with absolutely no intentions for ranking in search engines.

Gray Hat = 95% of developers. People that submit to directories or write articles for digg ... I'm talking to you

Black Hat = These guys are too smart for their own good. Automated blog/wiki spam, cloaked/doorway pages, totally automated content. This is the upper 2% that makes 80% of the affiliate/ypn $$$. Their site's life before a ban might only be 6 months but they make $xxxx and have build 50 more sites in that time span. It's just a #s game afterall.

Just my opinion, but nobody can consider themselves totally WH if they even speak about how to rank in search engines. The knowledge alone is manipulating the system and this is what the engines DO NOT want. They would prefer for all sites to play on a level field. When one person knows more than another about an algorithm, the field is not level anymore.

What is right? Depends on how you want to play the game. You cannot blame search engines for banning people for manipulating the system but you can blame people who do not know the rules and complain when they get a ban.

    Knowledge is power!

The last post above mine is one of the few non ignorant posts in this forum. Bravo, and positive rep.

For the rest of you, it's sad how brainwashed you are by google and the other major search engines. When you realize the reality of things you will finally start to make some money online.

ErectADirectory = a guy who has no understanding of neither white hat nor black hat seo.

That is one of the most ignorant statements ever made...

I suggest you learn the types of seo then learn them and then comment on them.

Wow, what a nice guy. Slam in the thread and bad rep for stating my opinion.

If you want to pick sides and put forth your worthless opinions about me, go for it. I'm a big boy and I'll take a few punches on the chin. There are flocks of losers like yourself, people who feel their own dung doesn't stink. You guys are definitely the ignorant majority, so go round up your posse and attack what this forum poster has to say. At least I can look myself honestly and be proud of what I have become instead of hiding behind that mask, Mr Zorro.

I have, in fact, learned about different types of SEO and have made choices to stay away from either extreme. By my own definition, I cannot be white hat.

I have the resources, intelligence and skills to be black hat but choose not to because it is all about the user. Redirects and blog spam don't do the internet any good, although my bank account would thank me for it.

Users: In the end, developers must decide for yourself how you want to build and promote your sites. Don't take what I, Tonto, or 1EightT have to say about it as golden (like a ring, not a shower). Do your own research and decide for yourself what you want to do. All "hats" have their place on the net and are uniquely useful depending on what types of "products" you choose to sell ... Again, knowledge is power!

I'll agree once again. One can not be a successful SEO period without understanding each extreme. I personally take part in gray, white, and black. My black hat seo funds my long term success with white and gray seo. It's all about individual choices and decisions. In the end, it's a tough industry. Read and retain as much information as you can before jumping into things, or get passed over by those with more experience and knowledge. I remember struggling to make my first buck online 10 years ago. Now I live and work full time off of my web properties. Anyone who completely ignores the other side of things is missing out on revenue, knowledge, and experience.

Black hat is using using unfair means to obtain traffic. For example if you start sending emails to everybody at dp about your website thats black and possibly you would be banned. But in the mean time you would be able to create a buzz.
Guess white hat is the game of playing by the rules. Hard way of course.
And there is blue hat, which is in between.

I always love this topic. There are no lines that distinguish BH from WH..everyone who promotes a site does some form of BH..even GOOGLE uses BH techniques DAILY...
DP members get all riled up over BH since this forum is viewed as WH mainly...if they only knew.

That's not black hat. Black hat is not e-mail spamming. I think that's the problem with people is that they have no real idea of what black hats actually do. I personally don't know a single black hat willing to break any laws to obtain rankings or traffic. It's all about bending rules and taking advantage of flaws.

I didn't exactly say I was turning the other cheek did I? Only that I can take a punch. I do believe in defending myself.

The degradation was in the form of analogies "covering your face up with a mask" and "your dung doesn't stink" has to do with you being more gray hat than you like to admit. There are many ways of manipulating the system, you just feel that your way is the "right" way.

The Tonto comment was just in pure fun ya sidekick.

Only one question senor.... what is grey-hat about writing content for a site? I have turned many of my sites into natural linkbaits which I do not request links for and do not pay for links for, nothing grey or black hat just content and tools.

    I never even go grey...;)

haha tonto is with lone ranger... :p

Ahhh, but writing content specifically for ranking purposes is gray hat. Heck, that's basically what my software does, only on a large scale across thousands of domains and millions of pages :)

Excellent point, you can tell that I'm more of a Star Wars & Matrix guy rather than Cowboys & Indians.

Linkbaiting is the essence of grey hat. You are writing for links, whether you ask or not ... and the point of it all is better SERPs. This is smart but in my book it is working the system. We could also check the titles of your pages and see if they are search engine friendly. All this is grey hat because you are doing things with the long term intentions of improved rankings.

In my opinion, copywriting & SEO are different sports. You should pay someone to do that for you and then clean it up a bit.

I personally don't disagree with what you are doing and feel that by writing articles you "cheat" the system much less that of a typical SEO. It's much cleaner than, say, submitting to directories.

To top it off, you probably receive excellent rankings. Well done! I'm not against doing things this way and I would hire you over a black hatter to publicize a site of mine that I have long term plans for. However if I want to hit pay dirt for viagra or gay porn, I don't see much value in writing articles.

It's all a matter of opinion and I have always been told I'm too opinionated. You are far from the first to point out that my ways are flawed ... they are still my ways and I'm allowed to have them ;]

I think automating content for indexing and writing articles for link bait are two totally different things. I guess you can include them all under the umbrella of ranking ... but that's a big ass umbrella.

May I ask how you get your millions of pages indexed or is that a subscriber's secret? That sounds like a pretty tough job, especially if your site only has a shelf life of a few months and you've got 50 other sites growing at the same time.

It's not nearly as difficult as you think. We first select long tail keywords, second the software automagically pings the pages upon creation, next the software finds related blogs and submits trackbacks, and last we gather .edu links. All of it is automated. Just add a domain, import a keyword list, and move on to the next domain.

Black-Hat SEO is doing things like cloaking, link spamming, content generators, and keyword stuffing. The difference between white-had and black-hat is that the black-hat methods will get your site banned from the search engines.

Your understanding of grey hat is very very very flawed... grey hat is straying away from the path, the guidelines of Google or another search engine so white hat would be following those guidelines. Writing content is recommended highly by Google so it is white hat;)

Likewise cheating the system is doing things against what Google has recommended, what they state in their guidelines. They recommend linkbaiting and content writing so it is all white hat.

Grey/black hat is NOT making changes to a site with the intentions of long-term ranking improvement. It is going against googles guidelines, using methods that may get you in trouble if caught...

A dictionary probably would have told you that ;):D

Its could to see we are on better terms... does that mean I am not a loser or incompetent anymore?

But generated content will never beat organic, natural articles. Also watch google closely the next 6 months or so... I believe Google will be cracking more heavily down on black hat sites... I won't explain why yet but I have seen some evidence to support this...

and we will evolve with them. It's really nothing new and definitely nothing to worry about. Black hat will always be a step ahead of the game ;). People have been preaching the end of black hat and scraper sites for years. What happens? We evolve.... There is far too much money in the game to give up and go home everytime google changes something. Besides that there are three major search engines, and I don't see yahoo getting more difficult to spam anytime soon.
