Keword Density

Just wanted to confirm something, as you never know if things have changed etc

Regarding Keyword Density, am I correct in thinking it should be no more than 2% on the page.

For example if the keyword / phrase I was working on was ' buy widgets online ' and the results for that page were

    Buy (count = 10) (Density = 4.9%)
    Widgets (count = 9) (Density = 3.2%)
    Online (count = 6) (Density = 1.9%)

What could be read into the following density? Would buy and online, have to be reduced, would this be classed as spamming the word too much.

As far as I know, the best way to count the correct kd is to compare it with your competitors.

e.g. if your top 10 competitors have a max 1% kd on "widget" then you are "too" optimized. The best kd is to be at 1.5%

On the other hand if your competitors have a min of 4% kd on "widget" then you are not optimized.

the words buy and online would be general terms, imo, so it's quite ok as long as you don't overdo it.

    Thanks for that...

I just get a little confused with all this, you read something somewhere and then something somewhere else is telling you completely different.

For example I read that google does not want to see the keyword density over 2% for the keywords you are targetting, and then I read its ok aslong as your keywords are between 2% - 8%

    So I dont know :)

Also as buy and online are general terms, it is not so important with these, correct?

So widgets is the main keyword, and after looking at top 5 sites, I find the following for the word density.

    1) Density - 6 - 2.69%
    2) Density - 69 - 4.14%
    3) Density - 15 - 2.7%
    4) Density - 20 - 5.5%
    5) Density - 41 - 12.73%

So what can I read from this information, the site that is at number has the lowest density at 2.69% and the lowest count of the keyword, the bottom 2 are way too high.

So from these readings would it be good to be around 2.0% - 3.0%

I suppose you could conclude that if keyword density were to only factor...which it is'nt.

I dont understand what you mean, I know keyword density is not the only factor, thats pretty obvious aint it, but it still counts and its still part of seo to get right. Thanks for that constructive input anyway

3-7 % for major keywords is best, 1-2 for minor. Keyword density of over 10% is suspicious and looks more like keyword stuffing, than a naturally written text.

    I agree with this.

I'd take a hard look at the Top 10 sites for your keyword and see what they are doing. Go from there.

I wouldn't bother with this unless you are going for a very competitve category, though.

your main keyword is "buy widgets online" .

what is the keyword density for this?

i think %2-4 is good for you major keywords.

I've honestly never paid much attention to keyword density. Just keep your site realistic and everything should work fine.
