I see everyone going crazy over pagerank for a while...

When I started 10 years ago, people used stats and live counters and that was way more accurate in determining average visitors. I mean isn't the reason we use pagerank for visitors? Sure pagerank is good for search engines, but the objective of serach engine is for visitors.

So where do your Internet morals reside on whether you are doing a link exchange, buying a site or etc? PR or visitors?

I'm more concerned with unique visitors, quality links, and actual search engine rankings.

The basic things haven't changed - it's just how things might be externally ranked. We also have Alexa ranks, technorati ranks, seomoz pagestrength etc...

PR in the end means pretty much nothing... it's the combination of quality and quantity of visitors you get.

Whichever I think the linking site can give me. I want to get a little of both. If I have a site that I don't rank well for, a link that boosts PR will get more organic search traffic than a link with the focus of just getting visitors. But if my site is not ad-driven, and is more ecommerce like, I probably care more about visitors over PR.

you need a good mix of both, but Usually they are relative as an on topic site with good visitors will usually carry a high PR now this isn't always the case but are relative. they key is what are you going for... as some peopel care less about traffic want to build up PR on a site to only sell links, while others are about making the money on their site and sending traffic... its all in what you want.

It really depends on what you're using the site for. Think of high PR site as having a more significant influence on other sites, while a high unique visitor site with low PR can do very well for itself or advertisers not looking for a PR boost.

I think you have to take it everything into account. A person can manipulate any one statistic. "Unique visitors" can be of any quality; they could be useless bots used to artificially inflate the visitor count.

    Similarly, PR can be inflated.

If you want to know the true value of a site, you have to take them all into account and look for consistency. If a website has very high traffic but very low alexa rank and PR, then you can bet the traffic number is inflated. Similarly, if a website has high PR buy low alexa rank and traffic, than they probably inflated their PR.

PR is a great indicator, I think, but no indicator is perfect.

PR is superior to unique traffic as an indicator of a website's worth because PR is easier to verify. It's hard to figure out how much traffic someone else's website actually gets.

And some seo bot software can trick the search engine that thousands of visitors is coming to your site every hour. When search engine crawlers visit your site they see thousands of visitors in your log files while it is not.
