I locked my USB Drive! :(

Today I was checking a software and I locked down my USB flash drive. :(

    URL of the software: www.imation.com

    USB Lock down: V1.16

When I insert my USB it keeps on saying "Insert Disk" and nothing happens. I tried to use that software but it says "Please insert the device or run this utility as privileged user".

    Any ideas?

How about uninstalling the software and formatting it?

You will lose the data though..

I never knew that could happen. I use two external drives and I'd be lost without them.

I tried that. This software is not being installed on hard drive. I just copied and pasted the software in my USB drive , opened it , put a password and closed it. After that I can't even open my USB drive, even I can't formate it. When I try to do that it keeps on saying "please insert a disk" :(

You can chuck it into a linux or mac computer and reformat like that...if not I suggest never using that sort of crappy software again and buying a new USB stick :)

It's not a crappy software. It worked fine with my friend's USB drive. Infact he had this software builtin with his USB drive and I thought how about giving it a try, resulting a LOCKED USB. :(

It's your fault, you shouldn't have installed the software on the USB itself. Now that the USB is locked, the software is also locked and there is no way to access the software to remove the lock.

You should now install the software on your hard drive with the same password and try to unlock the usb drive. Who knows, it might work..

Already tried but no luck. It says " you don't have administrator privileges" but I am the administrator. Anyways I'm thinking to use it with FAT32 system, hoping it will work.

Hmmm, I'll first try to access this on Windows 98 and most probably it would work. If not then there would be no other way except to contact support.

What kind of software locks a USB stick so you can't use it again? I don't see how that's useful..if you want to get rid of it, there are a million ways..use your imagination! :D

Is it the USB drive, or just a flash drive or something that you plug in. If its the actual drive, I'm pretty sure you can unlock it on your comp.

I already mentioned what software I used. Maybe it was not for my USB. I just thought why not give it a try and it might work on mine. This software actually creates a hidden partition on your USB drive that is password protected.

It is just a Flash drive.

You may want to boot your machine off of a Knoppix LiveCD as you could then insert the USB drive, copy the content off, and reformat it.

Unfortunately I don't even know what is this "knoppix". Could I just download it and make a bootable CD and use it??? Also any links to the site would be appreciated. I'm too lazy to search right now
