If possible allways prefer SEO friendly directories to submit your submissiom... Sure directory submission is very important for SEO....
Of course it's source of backlinks (one way links - IBL). But do it slowly 'coz Google detects fast acquisition of links....

Why not ? If it wasn't, then you wouldn't see people offering directory submission services in various webmaster forums. As long as your link is in a directory which is not neglected, and is in a page which the bots can reach easily, there is no reason why you can't do it
Directory Submission is really good.Most of my backlinks are from Directories.But you should't build them fast.
Directory submissions are good, but it depends upon the reputation of directory as well. Taking an exmaple of google itself recommends you to submit your site to directories like yahoo directory & dmoz.
Thanks for all the replies but still confused. Someone said submit it in a fast manner, someone said it should be slow. Which is which....are back links different from directory submissions?
Does not matter. Even if you do it fast, it will take time for the directory owners to approve your site. It is not done automatically. So chances are not all your links will appear at the same time for search engines to suspect spam.
One-way backlinks always help. If you can find directories that will also get you traffic, that's even better.
They don't help much imo. The directories need to be very popular and have great quality to help any.
