Any LAN Network expert here?

Anyone here could help me with how to chat with another network computer on a Lan Network. Is there some kind of software of command to do this?

My computer is not server, it's just a client and I want to chat / communicate with other computers on network (not server).

    Any Ideas?

    I assume you're running windows...

if you go to Start --> Run --> CMD --> Net Send [users ip or username] [message]

e.g. net send 192.168.100.26 hello, i am sending you a message

you can also just type in the username of the user on the computer instead of the IP address and it will send it to them if they are logged on.

    Hope this helped!

That has never worked for me.

I'll try using the IP instead of workgroup.

This has never worked for me either. When I was in University I tried this lots of times without any success. And now I'm talking about a password restricted network client.

In windows, you have a winpopup application in windows folder but both of you have to be in the same workgroup, the same rule applies to net send command.

his PC got password protected is not really matter for lan communication.
I mean you can talk with him when he is using the computer (password unlocked) not when he was away (password locked). when he was away his computer should turn to be standby mode which you couldn't connect to him anyway.

hey people don't forget that it might be a domain not a work group and that means administrator can disable netsend, if net send not working for you it might be disabled also :
    Go to control panel >>
    + administrative tools >>
    + Services >>
And enable the service "Messenger" or windows messenger I just forgot it's name you will know it when you see it, it have been a long time since I am a Microsoft certificated system engineer .

You can install a local chat software like Vypress Chat like sufi already suggested. It should be installed on both PCs and the systems should be on the network.

I think a LAN connections should have a server and a client..
I don't think both client will work without having a sever.
    (not so sure)

Or the two of you should be connected on the same server

Everyone I guess you should've read this before answering. :)
The reason why I wanted to know this is I'm just curious if this is possible to communicate with other computer on LAN without his/her permission.
