recently I found that my site has 356 Back Links all together" fishoilsales.com

would you be happy with this or is it an okay number"

I am trying to find out what is a really good number of BL it takes to get a site more popular in the serps" I am #1 in the Yahoo serps and MSN" for the fish oil key words. it looks like Ive been on page 4 of Google the closest then on most weeks I drop back to page 6 the lowest" its really weird because some of my press releases ranked on page one for a week straight" but then disappeared".

but the main site fishoilsales.com never made it to the home page of Google yet its been 2 years. ???

I don't see how you can claim to be an SEO by anything to be 100% honest....when your site title does not have the keywords "fish oil" within.

I don't see the keywords in the body content and they would need to be there to have a possible chance of ranking.

These are just two of the reasons the site has not been listed
very well by Google.

Next though the URL does say fishoilsales.com when I land at the site it says

Welcome to kukui.com

I see what you're saying, but as Sem-Advance says, you can't claim to be a Search Engine Optimist if the main keywords you're trying to target aren't in the title. You need to either read more into search engine optimization by reading critically acclaimed e-books such as SEOBook to expand your SEO knowledge, or just hire someone to do it for you.

 

how do you check to see how many back links you have?

 

link:domain.com in google or site:domain.com in yahoo both give you some info. Yahoo pretty much gives you everything while google would give you a sample. Google's webmaster tools would also show you all the links it finds (updated per month)

depends. 365 baclinks could be great for a not very competitive keyword or a niche word.

Tthe thing is you can have a good go at MSN with a few backinks, as it's mostly on-site SEO. Yahoo is mostly off-site SEO, which is where your backlinks help out. Google is perhaps a mix of the 2. With google you always need more and more links to get to the top.

The importance of those links is much more important. In fact, one great link could put your site very close to the top. In your case, think quality rather then quantity (of links).
